After returning home, Tang Zhicheng officially started his job.
Ye Fangfei was also busy inquiring about job openings. However, the job market was tight; even if a factory had vacancies, they would be snatched up internally, leaving no opportunities for outsiders. With no news of employment, Ye Fangfei spent her days shopping for groceries with Aunt Zhao and the others, and when they had free time, they would sit together and chat.
Aunt Zhao and the others grew increasingly fond of Ye Fangfei, saying that the community spirit of the courtyard was not hidden from her. Through their conversations, Ye Fangfei learned many untold stories about the courtyard. One should not underestimate these aunties; there was nothing happening in the courtyard that they didn’t know about.
Ye Fangfei also caught sight of the person Aunt Zhao mentioned—Yao Feixue. Coincidentally, as Ye Fangfei was heading to a nearby grocery store to buy some food, she saw a girl in her twenties walking out of the gate. The girl was dressed in a pink polyester blouse and wore matching pink crystal sandals. Her outfit was among the most fashionable of the time, but it seemed somewhat mismatched on her.
If her skin had been a bit darker, the pink clothing would have accentuated that even more. Her attire was quite eye-catching, and Ye Fangfei couldn’t help but glance at her a couple of times. The girl shot Ye Fangfei a sideways glance; upon seeing Ye Fangfei's much prettier face, her expression changed. With a huff, she strutted out in her crystal sandals.
Ye Fangfei felt puzzled. Who was that? She hadn’t offended her; she merely looked at her twice. Why did she have such an attitude? Truly strange.
When Ye Fangfei saw Aunt Zhao, she told her, “Auntie, just now when I entered the courtyard, I saw a woman in her twenties who huffed at me when she saw me. I didn’t provoke her; I don’t even know her.”
Upon hearing this, Aunt Zhao immediately understood who she was talking about. “Ah, that’s her? She’s the second daughter-in-law of the Ji family. Her father is a minor leader in his workplace, and she has a decent job herself—working in an office at the thermos factory. She usually walks around with her head held high in the courtyard and looks down on everyone.”
“Why does she think she’s better than others? I owe her nothing,” Ye Fangfei said angrily.
“That’s just how she is. Well, let’s not talk about her anymore; we should hurry up or the vegetables won’t be fresh,” Aunt Zhao said as she grabbed her shopping bag and locked the door behind them.
"I want to buy some chives to make chive pockets. I wonder if the vegetable stand has any?" Ye Fangfei said.
"They should have some, but these chives won't last long. The weather is about to get cold," Zhao Dama replied.
"By the way, Feifei, have you bought your coal yet? You need to stock up on coal; if you don't have enough for winter, it won't be easy," she continued.
"And don't forget about the cabbage. In a few days, our street will be distributing cabbage. I'll let you know when that happens," Zhao Dama added.
"Zhicheng said he would buy the coal on Sunday. Our share definitely won't be enough, but he said he would find a way," Ye Fangfei responded.
"That's true; Zhicheng is resourceful. You really don’t need to worry about that," Zhao Dama reassured her.
"Not at all! We lack experience, so we still need your help, Dama Zhao. Like with the cabbage, I wouldn't know how to pick it myself."
"And the radishes—I have no idea if they're good or not. I still need your assistance with that," Ye Fangfei sweetly said.
"That's no problem at all! When it's time to divide the cabbage, I'll help you pick out the best ones for sure," Zhao Dama laughed.
As they chatted and joked, they arrived at the grocery store. Next to it was the vegetable stand, where quite a few people were buying vegetables—mostly women from the neighborhood.
Zhao Dama recognized most of them and greeted everyone as soon as she arrived.
"Old Li, you're here quite early today!"
