Knead the dough until it becomes firm, then roll it out as thinly as possible. After that, cut it into fine noodles. Place the noodles in a steamer to cook, and once they are done, spread them out to cool, occasionally stirring to prevent them from sticking together.
Finally, shape the cooled noodles into bowls and fry them in hot oil. Fry the noodle cakes until both sides are golden brown, then remove them and let the oil drain off before allowing them to cool completely. The last step is to wrap the noodle cakes in oil paper.
Once the noodle cakes were ready, Ye Fangfei also fried two jars of egg mushroom sauce in the same pot. The mushrooms and sauce were brought by Old Lady Tang. The sauce was particularly salty and could be preserved for a long time without adding any salt. If they had meat, making a mushroom meat sauce would have been even better, but unfortunately, their meat ration tickets had already been used up.
Time flew by when there was something to do. Soon, Tang Zhicheng came home from work.
"Wow, what delicious food are you making, my dear? I could smell it even before I entered!" Tang Zhicheng said without stepping inside, first going to the yard to wash his hands and face.
"You're back? Let's eat!" Ye Fangfei called out as she brought out the cooked noodles.
Dinner was simple: boiled noodles mixed with mushroom sauce. Worried that Tang Zhicheng might not be full, Ye Fangfei also made him a few egg pancakes with a mix of wheat and corn flour.
By this time, Tang Zhicheng had finished washing up and came to the dining table.
"Are you hungry? Sit down and eat," Ye Fangfei said.
Instead of sitting down obediently, Tang Zhicheng stepped forward, wrapped his arms around Ye Fangfei, and rested his head against her neck. "My dear, I have to leave for work tomorrow. Even before I go, I’m already starting to miss you."
"If I could, I would want to stay here with you every day."
Hearing that he would be leaving soon made Ye Fangfei feel a bit reluctant as well. She hugged Tang Zhicheng back and gently patted his back. "Alright now, aren’t you hungry? Let’s eat first. After dinner, I’ll show you what delicious treats I’ve prepared for you."
Tang Zhicheng held her for a moment longer before finally releasing her.
He, a grown man, felt a bit embarrassed about his earlier behavior. However, having just started enjoying this flavorful little life, he was reluctant to leave for work.
Ye Fangfei didn’t tease him; instead, she began talking about the food she had prepared for his trip. Fried noodles were one thing; they could be bought at the department store. Although expensive, Tang Zhicheng had never bought or even tasted them, but he knew they existed.
Fried noodles were different. Tang Zhicheng had never even heard of them, let alone eaten them. When he heard Ye Fangfei say that these fried noodles could be eaten simply by pouring hot water over them, his curiosity grew to the point where he wished he could try them right away.
Seeing his genuine curiosity, Ye Fangfei also wanted to see how they compared to modern instant noodles. She said to Tang Zhicheng, "How about this? You bring the thermos, and I’ll make you a bowl to taste."
Tang Zhicheng immediately set down his chopsticks. "Okay, I’ll get it right now."
As he went to fetch the thermos, Ye Fangfei entered the kitchen and took out a piece of noodle dough and a large bowl. She placed the dough into the bowl just as Tang Zhicheng returned with the thermos.
Ye Fangfei instructed him to pour the water from the thermos into the bowl. When the hot water didn’t completely cover the dough, she said, "Stop! That’s enough; we don’t want it to overflow."
