"Xiao Tang? Is that you back from the trip?" Zhao Dama turned around to see Tang Zhicheng standing behind her.
"I just got back yesterday, Dama. What's going on?" Tang Zhicheng asked.
"It's all about the rural assignment. Gao Dachui's family received a rural placement notice this time, and both of their daughters are of age," Zhao Dama explained.
Gao Dachui and his wife had been worried these past few days. They cherished both daughters and couldn't bear to send either of them away. Just when they were struggling with the decision, the street office sent over the notice for their eldest daughter’s assignment.
They were shocked because they hadn’t even signed her up. After some inquiry, they found out that it was their younger daughter who had registered her sister.
Initially, Gao Dachui and his wife hesitated, but now that the notice had come, there was no point in deliberating further. With the assignment confirmed for Gao Xiangchun, one daughter was destined to go to the countryside, and it didn't matter which one it was.
However, Gao Xiangchun felt resentful about being manipulated by her sister Gao Huaizhen, and she certainly wasn't willing to accept it quietly. Zhao Dama recounted the whole situation.
Tang Zhicheng then realized that this wasn't an external disturbance but rather a family conflict, and he felt it wasn't appropriate for him to get involved. Nevertheless, he stayed in the yard with Zhao Dama to watch the commotion.
After a short while, just as Tang Zhicheng was thinking of leaving, a loud crash came from Gao Dachui's house, followed by a panicked voice shouting: "Xiangchun! Xiangchun! Don’t scare me!"
Hearing this, Tang Zhicheng knew something terrible had happened. He quickly followed Zhao Dama and the neighbors into the house.
As they reached Gao Dachui's doorstep, before they could enter, they saw Gao Dachui carrying Gao Xiangchun out. Her head and face were covered in blood; she had already lost consciousness.
Behind Gao Dachui, Li Xiaomei was crying and following closely.
"Dachui, what happened?" Zhao Dama hurriedly asked.
"Ah, Xiangchun... she took her own life," Gao Dachui replied hastily as he rushed outside.
Seeing this situation unfold, Tang Zhicheng quickly called out to Gao Dachui, "Uncle Dachui, I have a cart at home. Wait for me to bring it over. Auntie, go inside and grab a blanket; we’ll need it for the cart."
After saying that, he ran back to push the cart.
Tall Hammer and Sister Li were momentarily stunned, realizing they needed to rush outside with their daughter. It was Aunt Zhao who pulled Sister Li by the arm and urged, "Sister, hurry and grab a blanket from inside. We need to cushion Xiangchun later."
"Tall Hammer, hold Xiangchun and wait at the door for Little Tang. We'll take her to the hospital in the cart."
"Ah? Oh." Sister Li spun around, her hands trembling as she didn't know what to do.
Seeing that they were completely flustered, Aunt Zhao had no choice but to go into their house herself and fetch a blanket.
At that moment, Tang Zhicheng had pushed the cart from his home over.
"Uncle Tall Hammer, hurry up and put her on the cart," Tang Zhicheng called out loudly when he saw Tall Hammer standing there in a daze.
Aunt Zhao helped spread the blanket on the cart and assisted in placing Xiangchun onto it. Together, they set off to take Xiangchun to the hospital.
Although the hospital wasn't too far away, it was still a considerable distance. Tang Zhicheng and the others pushed the cart for a full half hour before finally reaching the hospital.
Running all the way with the cart, even though Tang Zhicheng was a young man, he was panting heavily from exhaustion.
Upon arriving at the hospital, there was no time to rest; Tang Zhicheng helped with the paperwork. Since Tall Hammer and the others had left in such a hurry, they hadn't brought any money or anything else with them. Fortunately, Tang Zhicheng had just returned from buying groceries and still had a few coins on him, so he helped pay for the expenses first.
