Zhi You was just a girl, and Ma Lianfa immediately turned sour, even the mother-in-law who was supposed to take care of her during the confinement period didn’t show up. When a man gave her a cold shoulder and her mother-in-law vanished, coupled with the fact that she had given birth to another worthless girl, it left her feeling quite upset. During this month of confinement, Zhou Xiaoying felt both stifled and furious.
In comparison, Li Xiaomei seemed to be living in a different world altogether. Once she was out of confinement, Li Xiaomei would often bring up how well her son was doing, both intentionally and unintentionally. Zhou Xiaoying hated hearing it and was reluctant to engage with her. Eventually, the two drifted apart, leading to their current estrangement. However, Zhou Xiaoying had never quite gotten over Li Xiaomei's earlier boasting.
As Zhou Xiaoying spoke, Ye Fangfei happened to be standing right behind her, listening intently.
“Everything’s fine now; everyone can go home,” Gao Dachui said, trying to gather his emotions.
Since everyone had agreed that there was nothing wrong, they could only return home. After all, they were neighbors; even if they had guessed what had happened, they wouldn’t brazenly ask about it or gossip outside.
With Tang Zhicheng not at home and having nothing else to do, Zhou Xiaoying accepted Yao Feixue's invitation to sit in her room for a while.
“I heard it for real; Gao Huaihua must have spilled the beans,” Yao Feixue said. “I think she’s pregnant; I just don’t know who the father is.” Yao Feixue lived next door to the Gao family, so when she claimed she heard noises, it must have been true.
“How old is she? Is she even eighteen yet? How could she be so bold? Nowadays, such behavior isn’t something to joke about; it could lead to public condemnation or exile,” Ye Fangfei remarked.
“She’s not even eighteen; she’s only sixteen! I’ve never seen her close to any man. How did this happen?” Yao Feixue asked in disbelief.
“I heard Gao Huaihua has been getting close to a little thug; someone once saw them together,” Ye Fangfei revealed what Tang Zhicheng had witnessed.
“Really? I thought only decent people would avoid such things,” Yao Feixue replied. “But Gao Huaihua isn’t exactly a good person herself. Just look at what she did to Gao Xiangchun; it’s not surprising she’d end up like this.”
Ye Fangfei nodded in agreement. “Now that this has happened, who knows what the guy is thinking? There might still be more drama ahead.”
“If they’re already involved before marriage, it’s likely that the guy isn’t anyone respectable. He might just be trying to deceive her,” Yao Feixue said sharply.
Ye Fangfei nodded in agreement once more.
As events unfolded, they turned out just as Ye Fangfei and the others had predicted—more troubles emerged later on.
Ye Fangfei stayed at Yao Feixue's place for a while before heading back home. Outside, the snow began to fall again, and upon returning, she added some coal to the stove. She wanted to keep the fire burning; otherwise, it would get cold in the middle of the night when the kang cooled down.
Tang Zhicheng had gone out again yesterday, this time to Jincheng, which is very close to Beijing. She wondered where he was now; the roads were slippery with snow, and she couldn't help but worry about his safety. She also thought about how Tang Zhicheng's big cotton coat was patched up and decided she needed to make him a new one. However, there wasn't much cotton left at home. She planned to ask around at work tomorrow to see if she could buy some cotton.
Additionally, she needed to make him a complete outfit for when he returned to his hometown. She also had to save up some tickets; when the New Year came, she would need to bring back more things from her hometown. With these thoughts swirling in her mind, she soon drifted off to sleep.
The next day dawned fresh and new.
