Hearing someone speak to her, Ye Fangfei struggled to turn her head. "Yes, big sister, I'm going back to my mother-in-law's house for the New Year. Are you going home too?"
"I'm here to see my daughter. She gave birth to a big baby boy yesterday, and I couldn't rest easy, so I came over before the New Year," the big sister replied with a smile.
"Wow, you already have a grandson? You really don't look it. I thought you were about the same age as me," Ye Fangfei said, flattering her. The big sister beamed at the compliment and pulled out a bag of dried sweet potatoes from her purse, insisting on giving some to Ye Fangfei.
"Hahaha, you really know how to talk! Here, this is some dried sweet potato I brought from home. Try it!"
Ye Fangfei quickly declined. "No, thank you. Food is so precious right now; how could I accept it from someone I've just met?"
"Come on, why be so polite with me? It's just a bit of dried sweet potato; it's not anything valuable," the big sister insisted, shoving it into Ye Fangfei's hands.
With no choice but to accept, Ye Fangfei said, "Thank you so much, big sister. No wonder people say Northeasterners are warm and generous. I didn't believe it until now that I've met you."
Ye Fangfei's words were not entirely flattery; Northeasterners were indeed known for their hospitality in modern times. Given how friendly the big sister was even in this era, Ye Fangfei felt compelled to express her thoughts.
The entire carriage buzzed with excitement upon hearing Ye Fangfei praise the Northeasterners.
"You're absolutely right! This must be your first time in Northeast China?" a man sitting across from her chimed in.
"Yes, it's my first time here," Ye Fangfei replied.
"Is this your husband beside you? He looks quite dashing! Which village does your in-laws come from?" the big sister asked.
"Yes, he is my husband," Ye Fangfei confirmed.
However, when it came to revealing where Tang Zhicheng's hometown was, she found herself at a loss. She turned to Tang Zhicheng, hoping he would take over.
Tang Zhicheng caught her glance and naturally picked up the conversation. "I’m from Dalinggou in Tonghe County."
As soon as he finished speaking, someone in the back row called out loudly, "Are you Tang Shugen's son, Tang Laosan?" Tang Shugen was Tang Zhicheng's father.
Surprised that someone on the bus recognized him, Tang Zhicheng quickly stood up to look back.
In the rear, another person was also standing and looking forward. After scrutinizing closely, Tang Zhicheng recognized him as an older cousin from his family.
"Is that you, Brother Zhihai?" Tang Zhicheng asked, still a bit uncertain.
"Yes, it's me. Third Brother, have you come home for the New Year?" Tang Zhihai exclaimed, pushing forward excitedly upon recognizing Tang Zhicheng.
After finally squeezing his way to the front, Tang Zhihai looked at Tang Zhicheng with enthusiasm. "Third Brother, how many years has it been since you last came back?"
"Zhihai, have you moved to the city?" Tang Zhicheng inquired.
"Yeah, I had some matters to attend to in town," Tang Zhihai replied, a glimmer of something in his eyes.
Tang Zhihai was a sharp-minded person. Every winter, he would head to the black market in the city to trade and sell various goods. Today was the last day of the year, and he had initially planned to stay home. However, an old customer had asked him to buy two chickens.
Not wanting to lose this customer and thinking he could at least make a little profit, he decided to go out after all. He never expected to run into Tang Zhicheng on the bus.
Tang Zhicheng was the most successful person from their village. He had originally served in the military and later transitioned to civilian life, eventually settling down in Beijing. That was a place where high-ranking leaders resided, and everyone in the village admired and envied him for being able to establish a life there.
