Old Lady Tang perked up her ears, listening to the sounds outside the door. When Old Man Tang stopped the ox cart at the entrance, she heard it immediately.
"Oldest, hurry up! Your father and the others are back!" Old Lady Tang exclaimed as she quickly walked outside.
Tang Zhiwu and Tang Zhi, along with Wang Zhaodi, followed her out. At that moment, Tang Zhi helped Ye Fangfei down from the cart.
Old Lady Tang was the first to open the door: "Third, you’re back!"
"Mother," they replied in unison. "We’re back."
"Ah, come inside quickly! Fangfei must be freezing! Let’s get you warmed up," Old Lady Tang said warmly as she took Ye Fangfei's hand.
At this time, Tang Zhi and Tang Zhiwu also stepped out.
"Big Brother, Brother," Ye Fangfei greeted them.
Wang Zhaodi and Zhang Man followed behind but did not receive a greeting from Ye Fangfei since they had never met before. Although she knew they should be addressed as sister-in-law and sister, she refrained from calling out without an introduction.
Old Lady Tang led Ye Fangfei into the house, with Tang Zhi following closely behind. The two brothers helped carry a couple of canvas bags inside as well.
Once inside, Old Lady Tang placed the prepared food on the kang (a traditional heated bed).
"Fangfei, quickly take off your shoes and warm up on the kang," she said, reaching to help Ye Fangfei remove her shoes.
"No need, Mother. I can do it myself," Ye Fangfei quickly interjected.
She took off her thick cotton coat from outside and sat sideways on the edge of the kang.
At that moment, Wang Zhaodi and Zhang Man entered. Old Lady Tang pointed them out to Ye Fangfei and introduced them: "Fangfei, this is your sister-in-law Wang Zhaodi, and this is your sister Zhang Man."
"Sister-in-law, Sister," Ye Fangfei hurriedly stood up to greet them.
"Ah, Third Sister-in-law, please sit down. You must be exhausted from the journey," Zhang Man said warmly.
Wang Zhaodi always followed a beat behind Zhang Man; after Zhang Man finished speaking, she echoed softly, "Third Sister-in-law."
At that moment, Tang Zhi and his brother brought in the canvas bags.
Zhang Man, quick-witted as always, knew that Ye Fangfei and the others must have brought something back with them. She called out to her two daughters, "Da Ya, Ya, your uncle and aunt are here! Come over quickly!"
The children were all playing on their kang beds in their respective rooms. It was too cold outside, and worried about them catching a cold, Wang Zhaodi and Zhang Man kept the kids inside, not allowing them to come out.
Seeing Zhang Man calling her children, Wang Zhaodi followed suit and called for her two sons as well.
"Mom, why did you call us?" Wang Zhaodi's eldest son, Da Bao, asked.
"You little rascal! Can't I call you for no reason? This is your aunt. Quickly greet her!"
"Aunt!"
"Aunt!"
The children were obedient and greeted her as instructed.
"Here," Ye Fangfei replied, opening the canvas bag. She pulled out a pack of shrimp chips and said, "Look, your aunt brought you some candy."
As she spoke, she handed each of them a few pieces of candy.
The Tang family now had four grandchildren: Da Bao and Bao from Tang Zhi's family, aged ten and eight respectively; and Da Ya and Ya from Tang Zhiwu's family, aged seven and four.
However, Zhang Man was pregnant again—four months along—and they didn’t yet know whether this child would be a boy or a girl.
