"Well, I was just saying it casually. If Mother disagrees, then that's that." Wang Zhaodi shrugged it off, unfazed by the comment.
Ye Fangfei couldn't help but admire Wang Zhaodi's thick skin. Old Lady Tang had long been aware of her character and didn't bother to hold it against her.
Ye Fangfei then took out three pieces of delicate floral cotton fabric, all the same size but with different patterns. These were gifts she had prepared for her two sisters-in-law and her elder sister-in-law.
"Big Sister, this is for you; Second Sister-in-law, this is for you." Ye Fangfei handed the red floral fabric to Wang Zhaodi and the green one to Zhang Man.
She still had one piece left, which she intended to give to her elder sister when Tang Zhicheng arrived.
"This one is for my elder sister; I'll give it to her when she comes."
"I traveled all this way and didn't bring much else for you, just a piece of fabric for each of you. I hope you don't mind," Ye Fangfei said.
"Oh my, did our Third Sister-in-law really buy us fabric?" Wang Zhaodi exclaimed, excitedly holding the fabric up against herself.
"Thank you, Third Sister-in-law! It's so thoughtful of you to think of us from so far away. I don't even know what to say," Zhang Man replied happily as she received her piece of fabric.
She had thought that Ye Fangfei wouldn't bring them anything at all. To her surprise, this Third Sister-in-law was quite considerate, bringing them gifts from such a distance. It made them feel like they were falling short as sisters-in-law.
But that was alright; there was still a chance to make up for it.
"Third Sister-in-law, wait a moment! Second Sister-in-law has prepared something for you too; I'll go get it now," Zhang Man said as she turned to leave.
Wang Zhaodi, who was happily measuring the fabric against herself, suddenly felt anxious upon hearing Zhang Man's words. "What’s going on? Why is Zhang Man preparing something for the third family? She didn’t mention anything to me; I didn’t prepare anything!"
Wang Zhaodi awkwardly smiled at Ye Fangfei before rushing after Zhang Man.
"Feifei, I didn't expect you also bought fabric for your elder sister! You’re really thoughtful. Last time you brought those liberation shoes; your elder sister was so proud of them."
"When she came last time, she mentioned that her sisters-in-law used to look down on her, but now they’re eager to get close to her."
Old Lady Tang truly appreciated Ye Fangfei. At her age, if there was anything she felt unsatisfied with in life...
That was their daughter, and it was a decision made without thorough consideration by the old couple. They had found her a family to marry into. Tang Zhicheng's eldest sister married not far away, to the old Zheng family next door.
The Zheng family had been carefully chosen by Tang Laohan and Tang Laotai after much deliberation. The old couple from the Zheng family were honest and kind-hearted, with a good reputation in the community. They had four sons and no daughters.
Tang Zhijing was told that she would marry Zheng Shuan, the second son of the Zheng family, who was a diligent and reliable young man. In the beginning, things were indeed fine; although life wasn't particularly luxurious after Tang Zhijing married, it was manageable.
However, as Tang Zhijing gave birth to two daughters in succession while her sisters-in-law continued to have sons, her life began to take a turn for the worse. Although the Zheng couple were good people, they held traditional views that favored sons over daughters. It wasn't that they were abusive; rather, anything good that came into the household was given to their grandsons.
Tang Zhijing's two daughters meant she received nothing at all. Not only that, but any good fortune that came to the family seemed to bypass her entirely. The old couple often remarked that since Tang Zhijing had no sons, they would have to rely on their nephews for support in their old age. Even with two daughters, she would need her brothers-in-law's backing in the future.
If they didn't treat her well now, it was certain that they wouldn't be inclined to help them later on.
