Ye Fangfei opened the door to the west wing and stepped inside.
The west wing was divided into two rooms: the outer room was small, containing only a stove pit, a water tank, and a basin rack with a washbasin on it. A curtain hung over the door, and Ye Fangfei lifted it to enter the inner room.
The furnishings in the inner room were simple. Directly opposite the entrance was a wardrobe, and against the north wall was a kang, with two chairs positioned beneath the window. On the chairs sat their travel trunks, which must have been placed there by Tang Zhicheng.
The kang was covered with a blue-and-white checkered coarse cloth sheet, and there were two sets of bedding neatly arranged on it, clearly made up. Ye Fangfei did not do anything else but opened the travel trunks and put away their clothes along with items that had yet to be delivered into the wardrobe.
She then took a thermos to mix some hot water and washed her hands and face. After that, she dampened a towel to wipe herself down and changed into a fresh set of clothes. Once she had tidied herself up, she lay down on the kang to rest. Before long, she fell asleep.
In the past couple of days, she hadn’t had a proper rest on the journey home, and dealing with her mother-in-law and two sisters-in-law had left her truly exhausted.
Just as Ye Fangfei drifted off to sleep, Tang Zhicheng and his grandfather returned home. They had just been visiting their ancestors' graves. This year, since Tang Zhicheng had come back, Old Tang had postponed the grave visit to wait for him to join them.
As soon as Tang Zhicheng’s family arrived, they only had time to put their luggage in the room before being interrupted.
"Third Brother, is it true? Did your wife really get something from the warehouse? Is it from the accounting department?" Tang Zhiwen asked in surprise.
"Yes, it's true. This cigarette is something my wife bought from inside the warehouse for me to bring back home," Tang Zhicheng replied proudly.
"This is special cigarette for officials; ordinary people can't buy it without a cigarette ticket, which I don’t have." He continued, "And these cotton shoes I'm wearing were also brought by my wife; she said they were defective goods because there's a scratch on the sole."
Just then, Tang Zhicheng handed each of his older brothers a box of Peony brand cigarettes. When Tang Zhiwen asked where he got them from, Tang Zhicheng explained that he didn’t smoke and had never brought cigarettes back before.
Seeing Third Brother's proud expression made Tang Zhiwen and his brother want to punch him out of frustration.
The third brother was indeed lucky; after leaving the army, he managed to secure a job at a transportation company in Beijing thanks to the help of his comrades. Once he joined the company, he caught the attention of his superiors and even introduced his niece to him as a potential bride. The family of his bride was particularly well-off and never looked down on them for being from the countryside.
The only shortcoming was that his wife did not work, but now that this minor issue had been resolved, Tang Zhiwen and his brother were truly envious of the third brother's good fortune.
"You really have incredible luck to marry such a wonderful wife," Tang Zhiwen said with envy.
"Of course! Just look at who I am!" Tang Zhicheng replied, feeling more lively upon returning home.
The brothers chatted and laughed as they entered the house. The first thing Tang Zhicheng did was look for Ye Fangfei. As soon as he stepped through the door, he barely had time to set down his luggage before being pulled by his two brothers to pay respects to their ancestors. He didn’t even have a chance to inform Ye Fangfei.
Tang Zhicheng worried she might be upset; after all, it was her first time visiting his hometown, and he realized he hadn’t considered her feelings properly. He should have at least told her before leaving. Moreover, it was her first time interacting with his two sisters-in-law, and Tang Zhicheng knew well what kind of people they were. He feared that Ye Fangfei might feel embarrassed and end up at a disadvantage.
