"Big Brother, Second Brother, what are you talking about? Feifei is not your sister-in-law. She has her own life and job; she won't just put up with anything," Tang Zhicheng said.
"Beijing isn't like our village. If someone hits their wife, there will be people to intervene. I don't want to be taken away for education," he continued.
"Besides, in the city, most families have both partners working. Household chores are done by whoever has time or whoever gets off work early. It's different from our village," Tang Zhicheng explained.
In reality, there were plenty of men in Beijing who were quite patriarchal. Many would come home and act like they were the boss of the house, but Tang Zhicheng couldn't say that out loud. He feared that their parents might think poorly of Ye Fangfei.
"Your wife has a job?" Tang Zhihe and Tang Zhiwu asked in unison, having only caught the part about Ye Fangfei working.
Tang Zhicheng nodded. "Yes, Feifei works as an accountant at the department store."
The two brothers fell silent upon hearing this. The youngest brother's wife had a job, and it was a respectable one at that.
If it were them, they would be willing to do laundry for their wives without complaint. They wouldn't mind even washing her feet if it came to that.
"A department store? Isn't that where you can buy a lot of things?" Tang Zhihe said. "I've heard that if there are any defective products, they're usually reserved for internal staff."
"That's true," Tang Zhicheng replied. "But there aren't many defective items, and there are a lot of internal staff at the department store."
"So when it comes to each person, the chances are even slimmer," he added.
Tang Zhicheng was intentionally downplaying it because he was worried that if their family knew Ye Fangfei could get her hands on defective products, they might pressure her into difficult situations.
His strategy worked; Tang Zhihe thought about it and realized that indeed, there were many salespeople at the department store. And since Ye Fangfei was an accountant, she wouldn't have direct access to the merchandise. Even if there were defective items, they would likely go to the sales staff first.
By the time it got to Ye Fangfei, there might not be anything left at all.
Once everything was clarified, they moved on from that topic and began discussing other matters.
Tang Zhicheng had not returned for several years, and the people in the village were unaware of his absence. Tang Zhi and his brother would talk to him about the happenings in the village, or Tang Zhicheng would share stories from his travels.
The conversation flowed lively among them until Grandma Tang entered to set the table for dinner, prompting them to pause their chatter.
Tang Zhicheng quickly got up to help with the preparations, fetching bowls and chopsticks. Meanwhile, Tang Zhi and Tang Zhiwu sat like elders, not intending to move, but they couldn’t just sit idly by while Tang Zhicheng was busy. Eventually, they joined in to help serve the dishes.
Once the table was set, Tang Zhicheng went to his own room where Ye Fangfei was having her meal. Inside, Ye Fangfei had actually already woken up; she had stirred when Wang Zhaodi mentioned that Tang Zhicheng shouldn’t be doing laundry. However, feeling lazy, she remained lying on the kang.
When Tang Zhicheng entered and saw Ye Fangfei with her eyes open, he smiled and said, “You’re awake? Time to eat.”
“Mm. I’ll get up now,” Ye Fangfei replied as she sat up.
Tang Zhicheng looked at Ye Fangfei in her red sweater sitting on the kang, her cheeks flushed from sleep. Feeling a surge of affection, he stepped forward and embraced her, leaning in for a kiss.
