Tang Zhijing never expected that Ye Fangfei would actually refuse her. She was momentarily taken aback. She had considered the possibility that Ye Fangfei might be unwilling, but she thought that out of respect for her brother-in-law, she wouldn’t outright deny her, the elder sister-in-law.
What should she do now? She had already spoken, and the other sisters-in-law at home were waiting for her to bring back some good news. Ye Fangfei was almost amused by the situation; she knew that no matter how she treated her mother-in-law, in her eyes, she would never measure up to her daughter. It was also because she had been too accommodating in the past that they thought they could demand anything from her.
Since that was the case, Ye Fangfei decided not to hold back any longer and replied directly, “Mother, it’s not that I don’t want to help. You know there are no tickets available right now; it’s impossible to buy anything.”
“The pairs of Liberation shoes I gave you before were ones my cousin kept for herself. It just happened that we ran into each other that day, and she gave them to us. Although my cousin works at the department store, defective items aren’t always available.”
“Besides, how many employees are there at the department store? Even if there are occasionally defective items, they can’t just go to one person; everyone has to take turns.”
“If my elder sister wanted a pair for herself, I would definitely go out of my way to ask for them. If all else fails, I could even buy a pair for her. But she wants to buy them for her sisters-in-law—Mother, I’m not made of money.”
Old Lady Tang felt her face flush with embarrassment as Ye Fangfei spoke. She knew that this request was somewhat difficult for Ye Fangfei. Yet she also believed that although it was challenging, if Ye Fangfei truly wanted to help, she would surely find a way.
However, she seemed to have forgotten why Ye Fangfei should go out of her way just because of an elder sister-in-law's request.
Ye Fangfei, disregarding her own face, had even rejected Old Lady Tang, which left Tang Zhijing feeling even more helpless.

No one spoke, and the atmosphere became somewhat tense. Just then, Tang Zhicheng walked in. He had been in the main room talking with his two older brothers and brother-in-law Zheng Shuanzhu. He had caught snippets of their conversation from outside and was worried about Ye Fangfei, straining his ears to listen for any commotion inside.
He had heard everything that had happened, including Ye Fangfei's words. He didn’t blame her for not giving their mother face; he understood that she didn't want to act this way. Ever since their marriage, Ye Fangfei had been nothing but respectful towards his parents. She always remembered to send gifts back home whenever there was something special. Sometimes, she thought of things he hadn’t even considered.
How could such a filial person like her intentionally contradict their mother? If anyone was to be blamed, it should be his eldest sister for making empty promises to her sisters-in-law.
