"Third Brother, I beg you, please help me out for the sake of your elder sister. If you don't help me, I swear I'll make those wretched women pay when I get back!" Tang Zhijing cried as she pleaded with Tang Zhi.
Tang Zhi felt helpless. He couldn't understand how his elder sister had changed so much. Didn't she realize that the more she acted this way, the less respect her sisters-in-law would have for her? Even if he managed to get a pair of liberation shoes, sending them back home would cost money, and Beijing was so far from their hometown.
It wasn't that he couldn't afford it; it was just that spending this money made him feel frustrated. Besides, his wife had already said that she couldn't get liberation shoes, and he certainly couldn't undermine her authority.
"Elder Sister, it's not that I don't want to help you. Can't you see that those sisters-in-law of yours are just taking advantage of you? Tell me, do you know how much a pair of liberation shoes costs?" Tang Zhi asked helplessly.
"I know, Mother said they cost five yuan," Tang Zhijing nodded.
"What Mother said was for defective ones, and they cost more than five yuan," Tang Zhi explained. "The reason those pairs are so cheap is that Feifei's sister-in-law sold them to you at a price even lower than the cost price. But Elder Sister, you're only seeing the low price; Feifei's sister-in-law is also doing this as a favor."
"The department store isn't just run by Feifei's sister-in-law alone. If she gives you the shoes, the other salespeople will definitely have something to say about it. Besides, how could there be so many defective products in a department store? If there were too many defects, would the store still be open? They'd have gone bankrupt long ago!" Tang Zhi continued to explain.
Tang Zhijing listened and began to see the logic in what Third Brother was saying.
"Then why not buy from the department store?" she suggested weakly.
Tang Zhi couldn't help but laugh in frustration. "Elder Sister, since we're buying anyway, our county's department store sells them too! Why go so far?"
"But doesn't the department store require shoe tickets? We don't have those in the countryside," Tang Zhijing replied.
"You know you need shoe tickets? Where am I supposed to get shoe tickets? I don’t even have one myself!" Tang Zhi said, feeling increasingly irritated by her stubbornness.
Seeing that Tang Zhi was getting impatient, Old Lady Tang quickly stepped in to mediate. "Alright, Zhijing, since your Third Brother says you can't buy them, then you can't buy them. Can your brother really deceive you?"
Although Tang Zhijing was unwilling to accept it, she had no choice but to give up.
Tang Zhi didn't leave either; he sat down and chatted with them instead. Anyone could see that he was worried about his wife.
After the incident, Tang Laotai and Tang Zhijing had lost all interest in conversation. Wang Zhaodi and Zhang Man were also silent, fearing that speaking might bring trouble. The atmosphere fell into a heavy silence until Tang Laotai entered the room with her two sons and a son-in-law, which revived the mood.
Tang Zhijing and the others stayed for a while before leaving. In Northeast China, winter nights come early, and they are accustomed to having two meals a day—one around nine in the morning and another around three or four in the afternoon. Today was no different; they had their meal in the afternoon and would not eat again that evening.
Once Tang Zhijing left, everyone returned to their rooms to rest. Ye Fangfei and Tang Zhi went back inside, where Tang Zhi busied himself adding firewood to the stove and pouring hot water for Ye Fangfei to wash up. After the events of the afternoon, it was clear that Ye Fangfei was in a bad mood.
She washed up with the hot water Tang Zhi prepared but did not wait for him to join her; instead, she climbed onto the bed and leaned against the quilt, lost in thought. Noticing his wife's mood, Tang Zhi quickly finished washing up and squeezed next to her on the bed.
"What's wrong, my dear? Are you still upset about this afternoon?" he asked, wrapping his arms around her.
Ye Fangfei shook her head. "It's not that I'm angry; I just feel a bit down. Ever since I got married, I’ve treated my parents as if they were my own. But whenever something good happens, I always think of them."
