The second day of the second month was the day for married daughters to visit their families. Tang Zhijing had come back early with her husband and children. Ye Fangfei, as usual, gave red envelopes to the two children. Although she didn't particularly want to engage with Tang Zhijing, she felt it was inappropriate to be too cold given Tang Zhijing's enthusiasm, so she could only respond in a lukewarm manner.
"Third sister-in-law, you are really generous! Just a little pocket money for the kids would have been enough. Why give so much?" Tang Zhijing said happily, holding the red envelopes for her daughters.
"It's nothing; we don't come back often, so consider it a make-up for the past few years," Ye Fangfei replied casually.
"Still, you have a salary, unlike us. We barely earn anything," Tang Zhijing said enviously.
Wang Zhaodi and Zhang Man shared this sentiment. They envied Ye Fangfei's generosity; if they had over thirty yuan in salary each month, they would also be generous.
"It's the same for us. Even though we have salaries, we have to buy food and vegetables," Ye Fangfei lamented. "In reality, not much is left at the end of the month."
"Unlike you, where everything is available at home; you hardly need to spend any money," she continued, expressing her financial struggles.
Wang Zhaodi and the others thought about it and realized that buying a single green onion in the city costs money, while in their countryside homes, they had everything they needed from their own gardens without spending a dime. They suddenly felt that Ye Fangfei's life wasn't as good as they had imagined, and their hearts softened considerably.
Seeing that they were no longer solely focused on praising her, Ye Fangfei let out a sigh of relief. After all, she only wanted to maintain a cordial relationship with her sisters-in-law and elder sister-in-law without drawing too much attention to herself. She didn’t want them to keep showering her with compliments or focusing all their attention on her.
However, Ye Fangfei was destined to be disappointed. This time, Tang Zhijing was determined to get closer to her; how could things go as Ye Fangfei wished?
"Third sister-in-law, I heard from Mother that you work at the goods building? Isn't it convenient for buying things?" Tang Zhijing leaned in closer to ask.
"Not really; these days you need tickets for everything. Without a ticket, you can't buy anything," Ye Fangfei replied flatly.
"Aren't there defective items that don't require tickets? You work at the goods building; surely you can get some?" Tang Zhijing pressed on.
Ye Fangfei realized that Tang Zhijing was still hoping she could buy some liberation shoes for her.
However, this time it was just a test for her.
Ye Fangfei wasn't foolish; how could she let herself be easily probed? She replied, "Hey, big sister, what are you thinking?"
How could there be so many defective items in the goods building? Everything in the goods building comes from legitimate factories and undergoes multiple inspections before being stocked. There are hardly any defective products at all.
Aside from a few items that might have been mishandled and suffered minor scuffs, there are essentially no flaws. The last batch of Liberation Shoes happened to have a printing error on the soles; the factory workers didn't notice it before they were sent to the goods building.
It was also fortunate that my cousin was working at the shoe counter that day when I took my mother to buy clothes at the goods building. My cousin was thinking about my wedding, especially since my older brother and second brother had traveled a long way to attend.
I couldn't let them go back empty-handed, so she gave me those few pairs of Liberation Shoes. I did pay extra, after all; the shoe counter wasn't staffed by just my cousin. She handed me those shoes without receipts, fearing her colleagues might complain. By giving her a little more money, I ensured that my cousin wouldn't feel awkward about it.
Ye Fangfei recounted the incident with the Liberation Shoes. She wasn't lying; she had indeed paid extra. It was just that it wasn't to benefit her cousin's colleagues but rather to avoid putting her cousin in a difficult position. Tang Zhijing and the others had no idea there were so many underlying circumstances.
