After tidying up both inside and outside the house, Ye Fangfei finally went in to organize the items she had brought back from her hometown. She took out various dried snacks, thinking of sending some to her maternal family, her aunt's family, and also to Yao Feixue.
Ye Fangfei found a few small cloth bags to pack the snacks, making it convenient for gifting. She moved cornmeal, mushrooms, and vermicelli to the kitchen, placing them in the cupboard. She loved dried sweet potatoes and often chewed on a piece when she had nothing to do, so she set those aside in the west room for easy access.
The cured meats were hung on the kitchen wall. Dried green beans, dried eggplants, yellow beans, and mung beans were also placed in the kitchen for now. Tang Laotai had given her quite a few of these items, and she considered whether to share some with her maternal family and her aunt's family as well.
When Tang Zhicheng returned home, Ye Fangfei planned to hang the sausages and cured meats from the beams. Seeing him walk in, she instructed, "You're just in time; hang these up."
Tang Zhicheng stepped inside and took the sausages and cured meats from Ye Fangfei's hands, effortlessly hanging them up. Noticing that the kitchen was freshly tidied, he realized that Ye Fangfei hadn’t been idle while he was away; she had been busy organizing everything.
"Did you do all this yourself? Why didn’t you wait for me to help? You must be exhausted after sitting on the bus for days! Why not take a break?" Tang Zhicheng said with concern.
"Aren't you tired too? You're not made of iron. If you're worried about me, I’m certainly worried about you as well," Ye Fangfei playfully retorted.
This was why Tang Zhicheng doted on Ye Fangfei so much. She truly knew how to speak sweetly; hearing her words filled his heart with warmth.
The two of them went back into the house together. Tang Zhicheng noticed the pile of bed sheets and covers on the chair that needed washing. Without needing any prompting from Ye Fangfei, he immediately fetched a large wash basin.
"There's no rush to wash those; you should take a break first. I'll wash them later," Ye Fangfei said.
"It's fine; I'm not tired. These are big items; it takes more effort for you to wash them," he replied.
"I'm starting work tomorrow, so I won’t have time to wash them then," Tang Zhicheng said as he prepared hot water and began scrubbing with soap.
"I know you're starting work tomorrow, which is why I wanted you to rest," Ye Fangfei responded.
"I'm tough enough to handle a bit more work; I can't let my wife tire herself out," Tang Zhicheng said with a smile.
Hearing this made Ye Fangfei smile as well.
Living together as a couple should be like this—caring for each other, sharing the burdens. That's what makes life flavorful. Since the man is considerate of himself, Ye Fangfei decided not to hold him back any longer.
However, she didn't just sit idly by; instead, she squatted down to wash with Tang Zhicheng. As the saying goes, when a man and woman work together, it’s less tiring.
Tang Zhicheng and Ye Fangfei washed the sheets and duvet cover together, their hands occasionally brushing against each other, followed by shared smiles. The feeling was simply delightful.
As for Tang Zhicheng, he didn't know how others felt, but for him, working alongside his wife made even the thought of washing a few more loads of clothes seem effortless.
After washing and hanging the sheets and duvet cover to dry, they headed to the kitchen to prepare dinner. It was late at night, so they didn’t make anything too complicated. They had some noodles at home, and Ye Fangfei chopped half a vegetable to make noodle soup.
In the broth, she added four eggs that Grandma Tang had brought along. Despite the long journey, the eggs were cushioned with sawdust and miraculously none had broken.
Both of them were truly exhausted after days of traveling, unpacking, and washing sheets upon returning home. So after finishing their meal, they climbed into bed to sleep.
