The next day, Tang Zhicheng rode his bicycle to work. Ye Fangfei still had one day off, so she stayed home to rest. She had come to visit her family, Hao Chunying and Ye Jianguo. However, since both Hao Chunying and Ye Jianguo had to work during the day, Tang Zhicheng suggested that she wait for him to finish work so they could go together.
After Tang Zhicheng left for work, Ye Fangfei took another nap. She slept until after eight o'clock before getting up to wash up. She didn't cook anything; instead, she brewed a cup of malt milk and ate a couple of cookies. After that, she tidied up the house again and divided the mushrooms she had brought from her hometown into two portions, preparing to take them to Aunt Zhao and Aunt Gui in the courtyard.
When Ye Fangfei arrived at the courtyard, she saw Aunt Zhao and Aunt Gui standing in front of Aunt Gui's house, chatting about something.
"Hey, what are you two talking about?" Ye Fangfei approached them with a smile.
"Oh, is that you, Feifei? You came back from your hometown?" Aunt Zhao exclaimed upon seeing her.
"Yes, I arrived yesterday. I brought some mushrooms from home and wanted to share some with you and Aunt Gui," Ye Fangfei said as she handed over the bag of mushrooms.
"Oh my, these are great! It's so thoughtful of you to remember us," Aunt Gui said happily as she accepted the bag.
"I've got some red dates from someone else; you can take some to soak in water later," Aunt Zhao offered.
"I brought some steamed cake from my family; I'll give you two pieces to try later. It's my mom's specialty—especially delicious!" Aunt Gui chimed in.
Ye Fangfei didn't refuse; she knew both women were not the type to take advantage of others. "Alright, I won't be polite with you two."
"What were you and Aunt Zhao talking about just now?" Ye Fangfei asked.
"Oh, about that? Let me tell you, something big happened in your hometown these past few days," Aunt Zhao said in a lowered voice.
"What happened? Please tell me!" Ye Fangfei urged eagerly.
Aunt Zhao didn’t keep her in suspense and began to recount the story.
It was on the first day of the Lunar New Year, when everyone was still immersed in the joy of the celebrations. Ma Lianfa's mother had brought her younger brother's family over.
With his mother and brother's family visiting, Ma Lianfa was naturally delighted and repeatedly urged Zhou Xiaoying to bring out all the delicious food from their home.
"Xiaoying, go thaw the meat and bring in the fish. Let's have lunch here with Mother and the others today," Ma Lianfa said eagerly.
Although Zhou Xiaoying was reluctant, she forced a smile and replied, "Alright, we still have some meat jelly I made at home; I'll bring out a plate. I'll also stir-fry some rice for you two brothers to enjoy while you wait."
"Yes, hurry up! And make sure to fry a couple of eggs for Dashun, Ershun, and Sanshun," Ma Lianfa added.
"But there are no eggs left at home," Zhou Xiaoying tugged at Ma Lianfa's sleeve.
"What do you mean there are none? I saw several just yesterday! How could they be gone?" Ma Lianfa exclaimed, glaring at her with a rough tone.
Zhou Xiaoying was taken aback by his reaction. Before she could respond, Ma Laotai, who had entered without even glancing at her, spoke up.
"What? Are you unwilling to let my grandson eat?"
"Oldest son, it's not that Mother is trying to stir things up; it's just that your wife is not doing her part. Not only does she bring nothing but losses to our family, but she also doesn't care about us at all. She can't even spare a single egg for them."
