"What? I don't agree." As soon as Zhou Xiaoying heard that Ma Lianfa planned to raise his three nephews in their home, she became furious.
"Listen, this is just temporary. Once you have a son, we can send San Shun back," Ma Lianfa explained.
Hearing that she had no son, Zhou Xiaoying's voice softened. "Lianfa, I know you want a son, and I want one too. I've been taking medicine for years, but it hasn't worked. However, I believe that heaven won't be so cruel to us; we will eventually have a son."
"It's not that I don't want to raise San Shun. You know our family's situation isn't great. If we spend all our money raising a nephew, what will we do when we finally have a son? Raising a son is different from raising a daughter; it costs money. We also need to save for our son's future wife."
After so many years together, Zhou Xiaoying understood Ma Lianfa well; every word she spoke resonated with him. Ma Lianfa listened but thought about how he had promised his mother and couldn't go back on his word.
"I understand what you're saying, but I've already promised my mother that San Shun will stay with us for now. We'll talk about it again once we have our own son," Ma Lianfa said.
"No way! I don't agree. I have my own daughter; I won't raise someone else's son," Zhou Xiaoying insisted firmly.
"I've already agreed; San Shun must stay," Ma Lianfa replied.
"I don't agree! You..."
The two of them argued more and their voices grew louder.
In the main room, Grandma Ma overheard them.
She immediately interjected, "Zhou Xiaoying, what right do you have to disagree? If it weren't for you, would my son not have any children? How many years have you delayed my son? It's only because our family is kind-hearted; if it were someone else, they would have divorced you long ago. Now we're just asking you to take care of San Shun temporarily, what more could you possibly want?"
Seeing Grandma Ma join the conversation only made Zhou Xiaoying angrier.
This whole matter was stirred up by Old Lady Ma.
"This is my family's business, so you shouldn't meddle, Old Lady," Zhou Xiaoying said, suppressing her anger.
"What do you mean it's your family's business? This is my son's family. My son's affairs are my affairs. Am I not allowed to make decisions for my son?" Old Lady Ma exclaimed, jumping up and down.
"I still disagree. I won't raise someone else's child," Zhou Xiaoying firmly stated her decision without arguing further with Old Lady Ma.
"Have the heavens turned upside down? Eldest, are you just going to let her talk back to your mother like this?" Old Lady Ma plopped down on the ground in frustration.
Ma Lianfa felt overwhelmed by the chaos.
"You old hag, this is my home. If you keep stirring things up, get out! You’re not welcome here!" Zhou Xiaoying was also furious.
Seeing Zhou Xiaoying insult her, Old Lady Ma got up from the ground and slapped Zhou Xiaoying across the face.
"You little wretch, you deserve to be struck by lightning! Why hasn’t heaven taken you away?"
"You unfilial thing! How did our family end up so unlucky to marry a calamity like you?" The old lady cried and cursed.
Old Lady Ma didn’t stop at just slapping Zhou Xiaoying; she continued to curse while trying to push her way towards her, grabbing and scratching.
Eventually, Zhou Xiaoying's temper flared as well, and she retaliated, engaging in a scuffle with the old lady.
Despite her age, Old Lady Ma was no match for the strong Zhou Xiaoying. Before long, Zhou Xiaoying had Old Lady Ma pinned beneath her.
