Only the small courtyard next door was said to be home to a couple. It had three main rooms and front and back yards. Although the yard was not large, it was a significant improvement compared to their own living conditions.
From the moment Ye Fangfei entered the courtyard, she noticed it immediately. Naturally, she also saw the bag in her hand. Soon after, she handed the bag to Aunt Zhao and Aunt Guihua.
Old Madam Ma knew that these were local specialties that Ye Fangfei had brought for them from her hometown. Although she felt envious, she also understood that their family had no ties with Ye Fangfei; it was unlikely that she would send anything to them. However, when she saw Aunt Zhao talking to Ye Fangfei and occasionally glancing in their direction, she realized that this old woman was definitely discussing their family.
Though it left a sour taste in her heart, she didn’t dwell on it too much. In this world, who could escape gossip? As the saying goes, "Who doesn’t have someone talking behind their back?" Ever since she became a widow, she had heard her fair share of idle chatter. If she were overly sensitive about it, she would have long since found it impossible to live in this world.
She knew her personality didn’t endear her to others, but there was nothing she could do about it. As a widow raising two sons, she had to be tough; otherwise, survival would be a challenge, let alone raising two boys.
"I haven’t seen you around these past few days; have you been away?" Old Madam Ma asked with a friendly demeanor.
"Yes, we went back to our hometown. We just returned yesterday," Ye Fangfei replied.
"Come in and sit for a while. Let’s have a good chat," Old Madam Ma invited warmly.
"No, Auntie. I still have things to do at home. I’ll catch up with you later when I have more time," Ye Fangfei declined the invitation, not wanting to get too close to Old Madam Ma.
After saying this, Ye Fangfei headed home.
Old Madam Ma watched as Ye Fangfei left the courtyard and spat on the ground with disdain. "What’s so great about her? I’m not impressed," she muttered under her breath as she went back inside.
Once home, Ye Fangfei took out the items she had brought for her family and organized them again. This time, there were quite a few things from her hometown that she needed to bring back. Among them were walnuts, pine nuts, and hazelnuts that Old Madam Tang had specifically asked her to deliver to her family.
There were also mushrooms, wood ear mushrooms, dried green beans, and dried eggplant. She even set aside some dried sweet potatoes for Hao Chunying. Each item was packed in a bag; didn’t that add up to quite a lot? Not only did she prepare some for her maternal family, but she also packed an identical portion to take to her aunt.
In the evening, after Tang Zhicheng finished work, he took Ye Fangfei back to the Ye family home. When they arrived at Liuye Alley, Ye Ting was playing with his friends at the alley entrance.
Upon seeing Ye Fangfei and the others approaching, he immediately abandoned his friends and ran over, shouting loudly, "Auntie! Uncle!"
Ye Fangfei got out of the back seat of the car. "Hey, Tingting, what are you doing here?"
"I'm playing here while waiting for my aunt," Ye Ting replied as he took Ye Fangfei's hand.
"How did you know I would be back today?"
"Grandma told me. She said my aunt would be back in a couple of days, so I came to wait at the alley entrance."
"Well done, Tingting. Your aunt brought you some delicious treats. I’ll give them to you shortly."
"Okay!"
