"Zhicheng, when you write back, please thank your mother for me," said Hao Chunying with a beaming smile.
"There’s really nothing much at home, just some things picked from the mountains and fields, nothing valuable. As long as you don’t mind, Mom," Tang Zhicheng replied politely.
"How could I mind? These things may not be worth much in your hometown, but here, they’re treasures that money can’t buy. Besides, what I cherish is the thought from your mother, not the value of these items," Hao Chunying said.
After a moment, she continued, "Unlike that family. For so many years, I’ve sent them plenty of things each year, yet I haven’t even received a single token of appreciation in return."
Hao Chunying couldn’t help but complain a bit.
Ye Fangfei felt helpless and pulled Hao Chunying closer. "Mom, what are we eating? You have to make me something delicious. I really miss your cooking."
As soon as Hao Chunying heard her daughter wanted to eat her cooking, she instantly brightened up. "Come on, tell Mom what you want to eat, and I’ll make it for you right away."
Then she turned to Tang Zhicheng and said, "Zhicheng, you sit tight; I’ll go prepare the meal."
The mother and daughter walked hand in hand into the kitchen. Originally, Hao Chunying was already cooking, but with Ye Fangfei and the others coming over, there wouldn’t be enough food.
"I was already making porridge and stir-frying some pickled vegetables. I’ll fry a couple of dishes so they can have something to drink first," she said. "You like the pancakes I make; I’ll knead some dough and cook a few for you."
"Sure, I’ll help you out," Ye Fangfei agreed without hesitation, always willing to listen to her mother.
Hao Chunying quickly prepared a plate of peanuts, a plate of stir-fried potatoes with meat, and a plate of stir-fried cabbage with meat. She also made a plate of braised pork knuckle specifically for Ye Fangfei and the others. Additionally, she pan-fried a plate of ribbonfish and another plate of sausage. Altogether, it made for a grand spread.
Ye Fangfei helped carry the dishes into the main room just as Ye Jianguo had gathered his son and son-in-law for drinks.
Ye Fangfei returned to the kitchen to assist Hao Chunying in making pancakes.
Inside the house, while Ye Jianguo and the others were drinking, Hao Chunying finally had time to ask about Ye Fangfei’s hometown.
"Feifei, how did your trip back home go? Your mother-in-law seems nice; she shouldn’t give you any trouble. But what about your two sisters-in-law? Have they been okay? They haven’t caused you any problems, have they?" Hao Chunying asked with concern.
"It was fine. Although there were some minor issues, overall it was quite normal," Ye Fangfei replied.
"My sister-in-law is quite unreasonable," Ye Fangfei said as she recounted the situation with Tang Zhijing to Hao Chunying.
"You did the right thing by refusing. Your sister-in-law has definitely overstepped," Hao Chunying agreed. "You can't let her take advantage of you; otherwise, you'll have trouble down the line."
"I know. I'm just afraid that if I keep buying things for them, they'll start to take it for granted. What if one day I can't meet their expectations? They'll end up resenting me, which is why I refused from the start," Ye Fangfei explained.
"What did your mother-in-law say? Is she siding with her daughter?" Hao Chunying asked again.
In her heart, Hao Chunying understood that it didn't really matter what the sister-in-law did; as long as her mother-in-law wasn't biased, everything would be fine.
"Of course, she supports her daughter, but I didn't indulge her. I pushed back directly. But don't worry, Zhicheng is on my side; he even said something to his mother about it," Ye Fangfei replied.
"My mother-in-law might be concerned about her son, but anyway, this matter just passed without further discussion." Ye Fangfei then repeated what Tang Zhicheng had said to Tang Laotai at that time.
Hao Chunying was increasingly satisfied with Tang Zhicheng. After all, just the fact that he defended Ye Fangfei in front of Tang Laotai was a significant improvement over many men.
However, Hao Chunying still reminded her, "Zhicheng is a good man; he knows how to protect you. But don't hold a grudge against your mother-in-law for this. You should still show her respect and care from time to time, especially for Zhicheng's sake."
