After having a meal at her family home, the couple washed up and lay down on the heated bed. After a busy day, they cuddled together and chatted.
"How was work today? Do you need to go out on the road these days?" Ye Fangfei asked as she nestled in Tang Zhihuai's arms.
"I should have to make a trip to the sea in a few days. If there's anything you want, just let me know, and I'll see if I can bring it back for you," Tang Zhihuai replied, holding his wife contentedly.
Ye Fangfei thought for a moment and realized she didn't really need anything. "I'm fine with everything, but just be careful on the road. It's still snowy out there, and it's not easy to drive."
Thinking about her husband having to drive in such icy weather made Ye Fangfei feel a pang of concern.
"Don't worry, I know what I'm doing. I'm familiar with this route," Tang Zhihuai reassured her.
"By the way, let's visit my aunt after work tomorrow. I brought some local specialties for her," Ye Fangfei remembered that she needed to find time to visit her aunt's house.
"Sure, if I don't have anything going on tomorrow, I'll come over early. We can have dinner together," Tang Zhihuai agreed.
Nowadays, every household was tight on food supplies, and unless necessary, they wouldn't casually eat at someone else's home.
"Alright, if you come early, you can start cooking. Tomorrow is my first day back at work, so I’ll probably be busy for a few days," Ye Fangfei said.
After chatting for a while, the couple embraced and fell asleep.
The next day, they left for work together. Ye Fangfei had packed a small bag of pine nuts and walnuts to give to Wang Dan.
She rode her bicycle to the department store and parked it in the bike shed before heading upstairs to the office.
In the office, Wang Dan was already there, busy organizing her desk.
"Good morning, Sister Wang," Ye Fangfei greeted her.
"Good morning, Xiaoye! Did you come back from your hometown?" Wang Dan looked up and smiled upon seeing Ye Fangfei.
"I came back the day before yesterday. I brought some pine nuts and walnuts from home; here, try some," Ye Fangfei said as she took out the small bag from her pack and handed it to her.
Wang Dan accepted it with a smile. "I've heard so much about the big pine nuts from Northeast China; now I finally get to try them."
Ye Fangfei set her bag down and said to Wang Dan, "I’ll go inform Manager Yao."
Since she had taken two days off in advance to return home, it was only right for her to check in with Manager Yao now that she was back.
On her first day at work, as Ye Fangfei had anticipated, she was so busy that she barely had time to lift her head. She had to tally the shipments and receipts from the New Year period. With the end of the month approaching, everyone’s wages also needed to be calculated in advance.
During lunch, she didn’t have much time and hastily grabbed a bite in the cafeteria before diving back into her work in the afternoon. She remained engrossed in calculations until it was time to clock out. When Xiao Ye left, she decided to leave the rest for tomorrow. Wang Dan noticed it was quitting time, grabbed her bag, and headed out.
Seeing that it was indeed time to go, Ye Fangfei tidied up her desk, putting everything into her drawer before leaving as well.
By the time she got home, Tang Zhi had already prepared dinner—corn gruel with steamed corn buns and a stir-fried dish of wood ear mushrooms with eggs.
"You're back? Come eat!" Tang Zhi called out as he emerged from the kitchen wearing an apron.
"Let me wash my hands first," Ye Fangfei replied, pushing her bicycle aside and placing her backpack inside before heading to wash up for dinner.
The corn gruel Tang Zhi made was particularly thick and hearty. As she ate, Ye Fangfei praised him, "This corn gruel is really good—better than what my mom makes."
Seeing how much she enjoyed it made Tang Zhi happy. He picked up some wood ear mushrooms with his chopsticks and gently said, "If you like it, eat more."
"You have to add more water and cook it longer for the corn gruel to be thick like this. If you enjoy it, I’ll make it for you more often."
"Ah, I always rush when I make porridge, thinking just boiling it quickly will do. Yours is definitely better," Ye Fangfei said as she finished one bowl and served herself another.
