"Auntie, I brought some local specialties from my hometown for you to try," Ye Fangfei said as she handed the items to Aunt Hao.
"Why go through all that trouble? Just keep it for yourselves," Aunt Hao replied, though the corners of her mouth lifted, revealing her delight.
"You're not just anyone; you're my dear aunt. When I have something good, I should share it with you," Ye Fangfei insisted.
In truth, it was nothing extravagant—just pine nuts, walnuts, and hazelnuts from the mountains back home, along with some mushrooms and wood ear fungus. Ye Fangfei tugged at Aunt Hao's arm playfully.
Hearing her niece's words made Aunt Hao even happier. After all, she had no daughters of her own and treated Ye Fangfei like her own child. With her niece being so affectionate, how could Aunt Hao not feel joy?
"These are precious items; you can't even buy them with money most of the time," Aunt Hao exclaimed. "Thanks to my niece, I get to taste these big pine nuts from Northeast China!"
"Oh, it's nothing. If you like them, I'll have my mom send more," Tang Zhicheng chimed in from the side.
"Of course! This is more than enough for me. It's not easy for your mom to gather these things in the mountains," Aunt Hao quickly replied.
"It's fine; these aren't worth much at our place. This year, I'll have my mom gather more," Tang Zhicheng said. "We can trade with the villagers too. I'll ask my mom to send more when the time comes." He had been thinking about this for a while since Ye Fangfei also loved these treats.
While these items weren't rare in Northeast China, they were hard to come by in the city, where even money couldn't buy them. It was a good way to build connections.
After spending some time at Aunt Hao's house, they took half of a ham that Aunt Hao had received from an old friend back home and headed back.
Once home, Tang Zhicheng hung the ham in the kitchen. He then stoked the stove so that the bed would stay warm through the night.
Next, he poured water for Ye Fangfei to wash up. Since their marriage, whenever Tang Zhicheng was home, he took care of most household chores, including bringing water for Ye Fangfei to wash up.
Ye Fangfei had grown accustomed to this; after he brought in the water, she washed her hands and face before rinsing her feet.
Once Tang Zhicheng finished washing up as well, they both climbed into bed together. After several busy days, Ye Fangfei finally felt a sense of completion.
During this time, Tang Zhicheng had also taken a business trip to Haicheng.
Tang Zhicheng brought back a coat and a silk scarf for Ye Fangfei.
"Dear, this is for you. What do you think?" he asked with eager anticipation.
The coat was a creamy white cashmere piece, featuring double-breasted buttons and a large collar, tailored to accentuate the waist.
Tang Zhicheng had a good eye; this coat would still be fashionable even in modern times.
"I like it, I really do," Ye Fangfei replied. Since coming to this era, it was her first time wearing such a beautiful outfit.
"I'm glad you like it. The moment I saw this coat, I knew you would look stunning in it," Tang Zhicheng said as he watched her try it on.
"See? I think it looks great too. But this coat must not have been cheap, right? Do you have enough money?" Ye Fangfei asked playfully while trying on the coat.
"Well, tomorrow you can give me fifty more. I'm short on cash; I borrowed fifty from a colleague," Tang Zhicheng explained.
"How much did this coat cost? You borrowed that much?" Ye Fangfei knew that Tang Zhicheng had earned over a hundred yuan during his outing.
"That was just part of it. This coat must be around two hundred, right?"
"This coat cost over one hundred thirty yuan, but I have enough money," he reassured her. "However, I bought some things in advance for when I returned, which is why I'm short now."
