Tang Zhicheng found a place to park his bicycle and gave the attendant five coins to watch over it. He then helped Ye Fangfei into the hospital, making their way to the obstetrics and gynecology department.
The doctor had just started their shift, and Ye Fangfei was the first patient of the day.
"What seems to be the problem? Where do you feel unwell?" the doctor gestured for Ye Fangfei to sit in the chair across from them.
Tang Zhicheng carefully assisted Ye Fangfei as she settled onto the stool. Before she could speak, he eagerly interjected, "Doctor, my wife seems to be pregnant. Could you please check her thoroughly?"
It was the first time the doctor had seen a soon-to-be father so anxious. Recognizing Tang Zhicheng's concern for his wife, the doctor felt positively inclined towards him. With a smile, they asked Ye Fangfei, "When was your last menstrual period? Are you experiencing any discomfort?"
Ye Fangfei thought for a moment before replying, "My last period was on the last month. I don't really feel anything unusual, but this morning I did feel a bit nauseous when I smelled fish."
"Place your hand here; I'll check your pulse. After that, we'll do a blood test," the doctor instructed, placing a pulse pillow beside her.
Ye Fangfei placed her hand on it while the doctor extended three fingers to rest on her wrist. After checking her left wrist, they switched to her right, taking their time with each pulse point before lowering their hand.
Tang Zhicheng leaned forward with anticipation and asked, "Doctor, what do you think? Is my wife pregnant?"
Seeing Tang Zhicheng's eagerness, the doctor smiled and said, "It’s quite likely that she is pregnant. If you're still unsure, we can do a blood test for confirmation."
"Then let’s do a blood test," Tang Zhicheng replied, only then remembering to consult Ye Fangfei. "Wife, should we get a blood test?"
Feeling curious about the results herself, Ye Fangfei understood Tang Zhicheng's urgency and smiled in response. "Sure, let’s go get the blood test."
The doctor wrote up an order for the test, and Tang Zhicheng assisted Ye Fangfei to the blood draw station where they took her blood sample.
Since it would take two hours for the results to come back, Tang Zhicheng decided to take Ye Fangfei out to a nearby goods building to buy some nutritional supplements.
"If this turns out to be true pregnancy, she needs to eat well and nourish her body," he thought.
This goods building was not where Ye Fangfei worked nor where Hu Qiuyue worked. In Beijing, there were four goods buildings located in each of the four city districts: east, south, west, and north. Ye Fangfei worked in the eastern district while Hu Qiuyue worked in the southern district.
They went to the North City Goods Building. The two of them didn’t buy much; Tang Zhicheng bought Ye Fangfei two cans of malt milk. He also got some big rabbit milk candies, letting his wife indulge in a couple like she did in her childhood. Additionally, he bought her a pound of steamed cake, half a pound of horned melon, and half a pound of roasted fruit—everything that Ye Fangfei loved to eat.
Tang Zhicheng wanted to buy some fabric as well, intending to make clothes for their child. However, Ye Fangfei stopped him, saying that her mother, Hao Chunying, worked at a textile factory and could get any fabric they needed. There was no need to buy it; not only was it expensive, but they also needed tickets to purchase it.
Having bought little, they didn’t linger at the Goods Building for long. Noticing that it was almost time, they returned to the hospital to check the results. Upon arriving at the hospital, they went to the examination window to collect their paperwork and then headed back to the consultation room to see the doctor.
“Congratulations! You’re pregnant,” the doctor said as he looked at the report.
