After receiving the exact news from the doctor, Tang Zhicheng brought Ye Fangfei home.
"Dear, you should rest on the bed. I'll make you a cup of malt milk," Tang Zhicheng said as he helped Ye Fangfei sit down and knelt to take off her shoes.
"You don't need to be so nervous. I don't have a son; the baby is still in my belly," Ye Fangfei smiled and reassured him, noticing his anxious demeanor.
"That won't do. I have to take care of both of you. I'm looking forward to you giving me a big, chubby boy," Tang Zhicheng replied.
"Really? Are you so sure it's a boy in my belly? What if it's a girl? You wouldn't like that?" Ye Fangfei asked, looking at him curiously.
Upon hearing her words, Tang Zhicheng immediately shook his head. "No way! I like both girls and boys."
"I was just saying that; I'm not someone who values sons over daughters," she replied.
"That's more like it. But let me tell you, if we have a girl, you better not treat us poorly. Otherwise, I'll take our daughter and leave you, and she'll call someone else 'Daddy,'" Ye Fangfei warned playfully.
Tang Zhicheng was taken aback by her boldness and quickly pulled her into his embrace. "You wouldn't dare! You'll always be my wife, and the child will call me 'Daddy.'"
Ye Fangfei allowed him to hold her but insisted on making her point clear. "I'm serious! If you don't treat our daughter well, I might just leave. But if you take care of us both, of course, I won't go anywhere."
"I promise I'll take care of both of you," Tang Zhicheng assured her earnestly.
"Alright, I was just teasing. I believe you're not someone who favors sons over daughters," she said with a smile.
"You said you'd make me malt milk; hurry up!" Ye Fangfei urged him.
Tang Zhicheng realized he might have overreacted a bit and gave a sheepish smile before preparing the malt milk for her.
For the rest of the time, he followed her closely, worried that she might trip or hurt herself. Eventually, Ye Fangfei grew annoyed and said, "You should go do what you need to do instead of constantly following me around."
Seeing his wife upset, Tang Zhicheng quickly responded, "Dear, please don’t be angry! Look, I peeled some pine nuts for you."
Ye Fangfei felt both amused and exasperated; she understood it was his first time being a father and that he was a bit overwhelmed.
"Alright, just put them here; I'll eat them later. I'm fine; you don’t need to be overly concerned."
"Besides, I still have to go to work. Are you going to accompany me to work?" Ye Fangfei reassured him.
Tang Zhicheng suddenly remembered that his wife had to continue working. He wanted to suggest that she take a break from her job, but the words caught in his throat. He knew it was impossible to ask her not to work.
There were many pregnant women around, and he had never heard of anyone stopping work just because they were expecting.
"I'll drive you to work, and you can wait for me to pick you up after your shift. You just sit in the office; you won't have to exert yourself. But be careful when going up and down the stairs," Tang Zhicheng cautioned with concern.
Ye Fangfei wasn't annoyed; she understood that her husband was just worried about her. However, she couldn't bear to hear him fret all the time. So, she decided to change the subject. "Zhicheng, how about we make dumplings for dinner? I'm craving them."
Tang Zhicheng was already pondering what to cook for his wife. Now that she mentioned wanting dumplings, he naturally wanted to fulfill her wish. "Sure, but we don't have any meat at home, and it's too late to buy some now. However, we do have some cured meat. How about we use that?"
Ye Fangfei knew there was no fresh meat at home, but having cured meat would be fine too. "Alright, cured meat sounds good."
