He himself felt that life was quite good for the two of them. If anyone were to intrude, even his own parents, it would feel uncomfortable. So he wrote back to refuse his mother's request to come over.
The doctor came to check on Ye Fangfei: "You're about to give birth; let's get you into the delivery room."
Tang Zhi followed the doctor and nurse as they escorted Ye Fangfei into the delivery room.
When Hao Chunying arrived, she heard from the other mothers in the ward that Ye Fangfei had gone into labor and hurried over.
"Zhi, how long has Feifei been in there? What did the doctor say?" Hao Chunying asked anxiously.
"Mom, you're here. The doctor said Feifei's position is good; she should have no problem delivering naturally. She's been in there for almost an hour now," Tang Zhi replied.
After saying this, Tang Zhi fell silent, his eyes fixed on the delivery room door as if he wished he could bore a hole through it with his gaze.
After waiting for nearly another hour, the delivery room door finally opened.
A nurse came out holding a swaddled bundle: "Is there a family member of Ye Fangfei here?"
"Yes, yes!" Tang Zhi and Hao Chunying rushed forward.
"Nurse, how is my wife?"
"Nurse, is it a boy or a girl?"
Tang Zhi and Hao Chunying spoke simultaneously, though their concerns were quite different.
The nurse seemed to appreciate Tang Zhi's immediate concern for the mother and her attitude towards him softened considerably.
"The mother is fine; she'll be brought out shortly after we clean her up." After a pause, she added, "The mother has given birth to a daughter, weighing... "
Tang Zhi felt relieved knowing that his wife was okay and shifted his focus to the child.
Hearing that it was a girl, he carefully took the baby from the nurse's arms. The little girl was rosy-cheeked with wrinkled skin and was sleeping with her eyes closed.
Seeing her made Tang Zhi's heart melt.
Hao Chunying also leaned in closer, looking at her granddaughter who resembled her daughter when she was just born.
"She looks just like her mother," Hao Chunying said, gently touching her granddaughter's tiny hand.
"Mom, you take her back to the ward first. I'll wait here for Feifei to come out," Tang Zhi said as he carefully placed the baby into Hao Chunying's arms.
It was already early October, and the weather had turned a bit chilly. Concerned that the baby might get cold outside, Tang Zhi urged Hao Chunying to take the child back inside.
"I'll take the baby back first. You wait for Feifei to come out before heading back," Hao Chunying replied as she cradled the baby and headed toward the ward.
Tang Zhi remained in place, waiting for Ye Fangfei to emerge. Fortunately, he didn't have to wait long; a nurse soon wheeled her out.
As soon as he saw the delivery room door open, Tang Zhi rushed over. "Wife, how are you? Are you still in pain?"
Ye Fangfei looked exhausted but managed a smile at Tang Zhi. "Did you see the baby? It's a girl."
"Yes, our daughter is beautiful. Mom says she looks like you. You've worked hard, my dear." Tang Zhi moved to the back of the wheelchair and took over from the nurse, pushing it himself.
He wheeled Ye Fangfei into the ward, where Hao Chunying had already placed the baby in a crib and was waiting for them.
Seeing them enter, Hao Chunying asked with concern, "Feifei, how are you? Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, Mom," Ye Fangfei shook her head.
"Tang Zhi, let me help Feifei onto the bed," he said as he positioned the wheelchair next to the hospital bed.
"Yes, yes, lie down first," Hao Chunying encouraged.
