"Feifei, are you hungry? Mom has made meatballs and scrambled eggs with wood ear mushrooms. You can eat a little for now. When Mom comes back, she'll make you some chicken soup," Hao Chunying said, looking at her daughter with concern at her tired appearance.
"I'm really hungry," Ye Fangfei replied. "I could eat a whole cow right now."
Tang Zhicheng didn't let Hao Chunying lift a finger. Since the food she brought was a bit cold, he placed the lunchbox in a basin filled with hot water to warm it up.
While waiting for the food to heat, Tang Zhicheng took another basin, mixed some hot water, and helped Ye Fangfei wash her hands and face. He then filled a cup with hot water for her to rinse her mouth.
By the time the food was warm enough, he took it out and began to feed Ye Fangfei. "Here, my wife, let me feed you," he said, sitting by the bed and spooning food into her mouth.
"Wow, your man really takes good care of you," said the woman in the bed by the window, enviously.
This hospital room was a three-person ward. Besides Ye Fangfei, there were two other new mothers. They had both given birth yesterday; the woman in the middle had a son, while the one by the window had a daughter. The woman in the middle seemed to have had an easier delivery and would likely be discharged soon. The woman by the window was struggling; she could only lie in bed and couldn't get up yet.
Both new mothers watched as Tang Zhicheng meticulously cared for Ye Fangfei, feeling envious in their hearts. Especially the woman by the window, who felt a pang of bitterness because her husband and mother-in-law were displeased with her for having a daughter. After giving birth yesterday, they had only come to drop off a meal and hadn't shown up since. She had to take care of the baby all by herself.
Of course, seeing that Ye Fangfei had given birth to a daughter and that Tang Zhicheng not only didn't despise her but also took such detailed care of her made her feel both jealous and sad. Why was it that both of them had daughters, yet Ye Fangfei's husband treated her like a treasure while hers showed disdain? He had even given her a cold shoulder right after she gave birth and only tossed two buns at her before disappearing again.
Ye Fangfei smiled and said, "He really is good to me, both to me and our daughter."
Hearing his wife praise him in front of others made Tang Zhicheng feel proud inside, though he humbly replied, "Isn't this what I should do?"
"You risked your life for my child. If I don't treat you right, am I even human?"
Ye Fangfei nodded. "Of course, that's what you should do. The child has already faced death once; everything I'm doing is for you."
"Don't worry, I will definitely treat you and our daughter well," Tang Zhicheng assured her.
"What's so special about just a little girl?" the woman in the middle bed muttered softly.
Though she spoke quietly, her words were overheard by the sharp-eared Hao Chunying.
When someone mentioned her daughter and granddaughter, she immediately retorted, "What's wrong with having a daughter? She's our precious one too. Leaders have said that women can hold up half the sky. What, are you better than the leaders?"
The woman in the middle bed hadn't expected Hao Chunying to bring up the leaders; she was so startled that she didn't dare to speak again.
Hao Chunying shot her a glare and ignored her, continuing to care for her granddaughter.
Ye Fangfei's stay in the hospital lasted just one night before she was discharged and returned home.
On the way back, Ye Fangfei held the baby while sitting on the cart, with Tang Zhicheng pulling it along.
At home, Ye Jianguo had already started a fire in the stove.
"Feifei, give me the baby. I'll hold her," Hao Chunying said as she followed the cart back.
