At that moment, Ye Jianguo also came out, carrying things from the cart into the house.
"Come here, my daughter-in-law, let me carry you inside," Tang Zhicheng said as he picked her up along with the blanket and brought her into the house.
Inside, Hao Chunying had already uncovered the blanket from the child, while Ye Jianguo, the proud grandfather, leaned in curiously to look at the little one on the kang.
Tang Zhicheng gently placed Ye Fangfei on the kang and personally arranged the bedding for her. He helped her take off her heavy coat and tucked her into the warm blankets. Then he went outside to fetch the chicken soup that had been simmering on the stove for her to drink.
"Dear wife, Mom and Dad, you all stay here for a moment. I’ll go tidy up a bit," Tang Zhicheng said after settling Ye Fangfei. He stepped out to organize the things he had brought back from the hospital.
Hao Chunying and Ye Jianguo watched as Tang Zhicheng busily moved about without a moment's rest, taking meticulous care of their daughter. Over these past two days, Tang Zhicheng had been running around tirelessly, which made Hao Chunying feel a bit distressed for him.
She called out to him, "Zhicheng, why don’t you take a break? You can sort those things out tomorrow; there’s no rush."
"You’ve worked hard these past few days too. Let me get you a bowl of chicken soup so you can replenish your strength."
"No need, Mom. Save the soup for Feifei when she has noodles later," Tang Zhicheng replied.
"What about your health? You need to take care of yourself too!" he added firmly.
"There’s plenty of soup left; it won’t hurt for you to have a bowl. You’ve been working hard these past few days," she insisted.
"You’ll need to take care of both of them for at least a month; you can’t let your health suffer," Hao Chunying said, ignoring Tang Zhicheng’s protests as she filled a bowl of chicken soup for him.
Unable to refuse his mother-in-law's insistence, Tang Zhicheng finally drank the soup under the watchful eyes of both his father-in-law and mother-in-law.
"Mom and Dad, you’ve also had a tough time these last couple of days," he said. "The kang in the west room is warm now; why don’t you go rest there? I’ll start cooking lunch right away."
Noticing that it was getting late and time for lunch, Tang Zhicheng planned to head to the kitchen.
"Zhicheng, take a break; I’ll make lunch," Hao Chunying insisted, not allowing her son-in-law to cook.
"Mom, you rest; I’ll handle it. You should try my cooking too," Tang Zhicheng replied as he followed her into the kitchen.
Both felt that the other had worked hard and wanted to give each other a chance to rest.
The last meal was prepared by the two of them together.
For Ye Fangfei, they made chicken noodle soup and added two eggs. The three of them steamed a mixture of rice and millet. They had been in the hospital for the past couple of days and hadn’t bought any meat, so they only had twenty eggs set aside for Ye Fangfei. They casually stir-fried a couple of vegetable dishes.
Tang Zhicheng looked at the unappetizing spread and decided to steam two sausages as well. He first brought the chicken noodle soup to Ye Fangfei, urging her to eat first. After changing the baby’s diaper, he called his father-in-law to come eat.
“Dad, the food is ready. Let’s go eat,” he said.
“Oh,” Ye Jianguo replied, his eyes never leaving his granddaughter.
Seeing that his father-in-law wasn’t moving, Tang Zhicheng leaned in to check on his daughter. He actually didn’t want to leave either.
It wasn’t until Hao Chunying noticed that the two hadn’t come out after a while that she went in to call them. She found the son-in-law and father-in-law both engrossed in watching their little granddaughter with great interest.
