"They are being too much. You shouldn't be so open-hearted with them in the future. Just because you treat someone well doesn’t mean they will reciprocate," Hao Chunying said, clearly upset. "No matter how much or how little, as grandparents, they should at least show some acknowledgment."
"I know. From now on, we’ll just stick to the usual gifts. They don’t seem to want anything more," Ye Fangfei replied.
"As long as you understand. What does Zhi think about this?" Hao Chunying asked, concerned about Tang Zhi's feelings regarding his parents.
Although Tang Zhi hadn’t said much, Ye Fangfei could tell he was also quite angry. After all, their relatives had been very considerate and had brought gifts for Xiao Yueyue. His family back home hadn’t shown any acknowledgment at all, and he must have felt embarrassed.
"But I pretended not to notice and didn’t ask him," Ye Fangfei continued.
"You did the right thing. Just keep it to yourself and don’t mention anything negative about his parents to him. After all, they are still his parents. If you say too much, he might get upset," Hao Chunying cautioned, worried that her daughter might complain too openly about her in-laws and cause her son-in-law to feel unhappy.
"I know; I wouldn’t be that foolish," Ye Fangfei assured her.
"However, I think he’s quite upset about how his parents are handling things," she added. "Like this year’s gifts—I discussed it with Zhi beforehand." The memory of Tang Zhi’s expression made her want to laugh.
"For the New Year’s gifts, just send what you think is appropriate. But since we’re not well-off and just welcomed a daughter, there’s no need to spend excessively. I believe my parents will understand," Tang Zhi had said calmly.
Taking his words to heart, Ye Fangfei bought two types of pastries, two bottles of wine, a pound of shrimp chips, a roast duck, and sent fifty yuan for next year’s living expenses back home.
This was also something they had talked about during last year's visit. Although the Tang family hadn’t split up, it seemed inappropriate for Tang Zhi to not send any money home after being away for so long. He couldn’t just send a little whenever he felt like it anymore.
So they informed his parents that they would be sending fifty yuan back each year.
Ye Fangfei had no objections; after all, being filial to one’s parents was important.
However, Tang Zhi's attitude made Ye Fangfei quite happy. A woman fears marrying a man who lacks clarity and is blindly filial. Tang Zhi was different; his filial piety wasn’t foolishness.
Hao Chunying was also pleased. Her daughter was doing well, and her son-in-law was sensible. After her son’s marriage failed, seeing her daughter happy brought her joy as a mother.
As they discussed the New Year’s gifts, far away in the northeast, Old Lady Tang also received the package from Ye Fangfei.
"Mother, I’ve brought back the parcel," Tang Zhi said as he entered Old Lady Tang's room.
Old Lady Tang didn’t check the package first; instead, she picked up a broom and brushed the snow off Tang Zhi’s shoulders.
The snow was falling even heavier outside. "Is the road alright?" Old Lady Tang was more concerned about her eldest son's safety on the way back than the package.
"It’s really coming down out there, but thankfully I went out today; the snow isn’t too deep on the road yet," Tang Zhi replied. "If we wait until tomorrow, I reckon it’ll be up to our knees."
"I figured you should be getting something from Zhi, so I asked you to check at the post office. I was worried that if the snow got worse, it would be hard to travel," Old Lady Tang said.
"Mom, is Big Brother back? Did he bring anything?" Tang Zhi Wu and Zhang Man entered upon hearing the commotion.
Zhang Man had given birth to another daughter a few months ago, making it her third girl. She felt a bit disheartened; she wasn’t taking proper care of herself during the confinement period and thus had no milk, leaving the little one to eat only some rice porridge.
She was hoping that this time Ye Fangfei would send some milk powder to provide a bit of nutrition for her daughter.
"Zhi, you’re back? What did the third one send?" Wang Zhao Di asked, as loud and boisterous as ever.
