"Old man, do you think the third one really doesn't have enough money to raise a child? I can't shake the feeling that something's off," Tang Old Lady said, lying on the kang with her husband. She still felt uneasy.
Tang Old Man had more thoughts than his wife. He knew that the most decisive among their three sons was the third one. Although he wasn't sure of the exact amount of his salary, he had a rough idea; it must be several dozen at least. Plus, his daughter-in-law earned over thirty a month. Even with a new baby, it shouldn't be as difficult as the third son claimed.
If it wasn't difficult, then they were just pretending to be poor. As for why they were doing that, it couldn't possibly be Ye Fangfei's idea, could it? After a man starts a family, he develops his own little thoughts—this was normal.
However, he had interacted with this daughter-in-law and didn't see her as a stingy person. Since their marriage, she had not only bought food and clothing for them but also often sent packages. This was quite rare; before marriage, while the third son was dutiful, he only sent them some money—there were no clothes or anything like that.
After marriage, it was clear that the daughter-in-law was responsible for those things. From this perspective, it didn't hold water that she wouldn't let them give anything.
If none of that was true, then there must be another reason for the third son's sudden behavior. Tang Old Man pondered deeply and suddenly had a flash of insight. He quickly sat up halfway and asked Tang Old Lady, "Have you sent anything to the third family's new granddaughter?"
He thought of this suddenly. Logically, his wife should have gone to help with the confinement period. They had written to ask about it, and the third son replied that they didn't need to come over specifically; he could take leave to take care of things just fine. Later on, he wrote again to say they had a girl.
He knew all this but didn't know if his wife had sent anything for the confinement period.
"No, what do they need from us? They have everything there; why would they need us to send things from so far away?" Tang Old Lady replied.
"Did you make any clothes for the little granddaughter?" Tang Old Man asked again.
"We don't have any fabric at home to make clothes. Why are you asking this?" Tang Old Lady wondered.
"Have you really not shown any sign of support for the third family's new baby?" Tang Laohan's voice rose sharply.
"They lack nothing, so what should I show?" Tang Laotai replied, her tone sharp. "You know exactly what the situation is at home."
"In the second family's confinement, they only had a chicken, and all the eggs were saved for her," she continued. "What else do we have to send to the third family?"
"But you can't just ignore them completely! Isn't that going to hurt their feelings?" Tang Laohan insisted.
He didn't fully understand the situation at home. It wasn't as if, as Tang Laotai claimed, they had absolutely nothing left. They might not have much, but there were still a few hens around. If they really wanted to show some goodwill, they could always send a chicken.
"She had a girl; does she deserve any credit for that? What difference does it make if I don't give her anything?" Tang Laotai muttered under her breath.
Though her voice was low, Tang Laohan still caught her words. He realized that this was the root of the issue; otherwise, the third family wouldn't have reacted so strongly.
While there was nothing particularly wrong with their gifts this year, compared to last year's thoughtful gestures, it was clear that this year's offerings were lacking.
