"Little vixen, I'll kill you! You're just like that ungrateful woman, a wolf that won't be fed. And you, once my son returns, I'll have him divorce you. Then I'll find a fresh young girl to bear me grandchildren." After scolding her granddaughter, Old Lady Ma's wrath now extended to Ma Xiaoying.
"Mother, the child is still young; please spare her," Zhou Xiaoying pleaded softly.
"Spare? Is this the kind of teaching you give her, you shameless wretch? You’ve already caused my eldest to be childless, and now you want to harm my grandson?" Old Lady Ma's words flew out like spittle.
Zhou Xiaoying bowed her head, not daring to retort, but the veins on her clenched fists were prominent, revealing her suppressed anger. She thought about how life had been since this old hag arrived and recalled the painful discovery she made last night.
She never expected that Ma Lianfa had gotten involved with the young widow from the front street. She didn't know much about this widow, only that she was young and had lost her husband early on. Later, when her in-laws couldn't accept her, she moved into a large courtyard in the front alley by herself.
However, there were many rumors surrounding widows; people said she was involved with several men. Zhou Xiaoying wasn't sure what was true and what wasn't.
Yesterday, as she happened to pass through the front alley, she saw a figure that looked very much like Ma Lianfa. Just as she was about to call out to him to wait for her, she saw the widow come out from one of the doorways. In an instant, Ma Lianfa quickly stepped forward and pulled the widow into the courtyard.
At that moment, Zhou Xiaoying's mind went blank. After Ma Lianfa entered, she followed closely behind. However, she didn't know which room the widow lived in and couldn't knock on every door to ask.
Zhou Xiaoying stood in the courtyard waiting; she refused to believe she couldn't wait for Ma Lianfa to come out. After waiting for quite a while without seeing him emerge, she had no choice but to leave first.
When she got home, she found that Ma Lianfa was already inside. It turned out that while Zhou Xiaoying was searching for him in the courtyard, he had noticed her presence and left through the back door.
Zhou Xiaoying returned and specifically observed Ma Lianfa's expression, but she couldn't discern anything unusual. She didn't catch him in the act and couldn't make a scene, so she had to swallow her anger for now. She planned to settle the score with him once she caught him red-handed.
However, she needed to think carefully about how to catch this scoundrel. The crime of hooliganism was taken very seriously now; anyone convicted of it could face severe consequences, including public humiliation or even being sent away for re-education. If this were to come to light, both Ma Lianfa and the widow would surely suffer.
But what about her and her three daughters in the future? Although Ma Lianfa was foolishly devoted to his mother and brothers, he often resorted to shouting or hitting when it came to her and the girls. She was merely a temporary figure in his life; without him, how would she manage to raise three daughters on her own?
What a waste of space he was! Why was he still standing there? Shouldn't he be washing the clothes? He truly had no sense at all. Her son had really drawn the short straw by marrying her, a bringer of misfortune—useless at everything, unable to provide even a son.
"Mother, I’ll do it right away," Zhou Xiaoying gritted her teeth and pulled her daughters close to her side.
