After bringing Little Moon back, Ye Fangfei habitually tended to the stove first. The temperature inside the house was decent; the stove had been kept burning while she was away. When she returned, she opened up the stove and added some coal, ensuring warmth for herself and also preparing to cook.
Once the stove was stoked and the kettle filled with water sitting on top, she finally turned her attention to unwrapping Little Moon from her blanket. She took care of the baby, changing her diaper and feeding her, then tidied up a bit. Since having a child, it seemed there was always something to do. Especially now that Tang Zhicheng was not home, Ye Fangfei was busier than ever.
After everything was in order, she still needed to prepare dinner. She intended to make a nice meal since she hadn’t eaten well at the cafeteria for lunch; she planned to fry some white flour pancakes. Just as she finished kneading the dough, Zhou Xiaoying arrived.
Zhou Xiaoying didn’t come empty-handed: “Xiao Ye, I brought you this enamel jar from the factory. I know you have enough, but this is my little gesture; you must accept it.”
Ye Fangfei was taken aback; she hadn’t expected Zhou Xiaoying to bring her something. However, she politely replied, “Sister-in-law, why are you being so courteous? Just take it back for yourself.”
“Oh, it’s nothing valuable. Our factory has plenty of enamel bowls and jars that get chipped every day. These things aren’t worth much at our place,” Zhou Xiaoying explained.
Ye Fangfei understood that it was similar to her textile factory; when there were defective products, workers could buy them at very low prices. It was an invisible benefit provided by the factory.
Since Zhou Xiaoying insisted, Ye Fangfei decided not to refuse any longer: “Then thank you, Sister-in-law.”
Seeing that Ye Fangfei accepted it made Zhou Xiaoying even happier. “If you ever need bowls or anything else in the future, just let me know. I may not have much ability, but I can certainly get a few bowls and jars,” Zhou Xiaoying said with a smile.
“Then I’ll thank you in advance! If I need anything, I’ll definitely ask you,” Ye Fangfei replied gratefully. “Sister-in-law, don’t just stand outside; come in! Come in!” she added politely.
"Sister-in-law, what do you think of this fabric?" Ye Fangfei revealed a piece of red checkered twill.
Zhou Xiaoying's eyes lit up at the sight of the fabric. With so much black, white, and gray on the streets, it was not easy to find something colorful. Moreover, this fabric was not only beautiful but also thick and sturdy.
"This fabric is wonderful, Xiao Ye! This time, sister-in-law is giving you something special," Zhou Xiaoying exclaimed. "Sister-in-law remembers your kindness. If you ever need my help in the future, I will definitely be there for you."
There was just enough fabric to make a top for Jin Hua and Yin Hua. With the scraps left over, she could piece together something for Xiao San Ya. Ye Fangfei actually liked this fabric quite a bit herself. It would also be nice to make a dress for Xiao Yue Liang with the red checkered fabric.
However, since Zhou Xiaoying had already spoken up, it would be rude to refuse. Besides, she felt a bit sorry for Zhou Xiaoying's three daughters. She had seen those children a few times; their clothes were all faded from washing and patched up repeatedly.
Logically speaking, Ma Lianfa and his wife both worked, so the children shouldn’t be lacking even a single piece of clothing. It seemed that their mother just wasn’t paying enough attention.
Now that Zhou Xiaoying finally wanted to make clothes for her children, Ye Fangfei couldn't bring herself to say no. After all, Xiao Yue Liang was still young and didn’t lack clothes to wear.
