"What's wrong, Lianfa? Who did this to you?"
The commotion in the courtyard had already spread to several nearby alleys. In these times, it was uncommon for someone to be caught in a scandal involving illicit relationships. Rumor had it that he had been cornered in bed by the family of a man’s father-in-law.
As long as people were at home, they gathered in groups to see the spectacle. Ye Fangfei and her neighbors were no exception.
"Xiao Ye, hurry up! I heard there's a couple caught in the act down the alley. Let's go check it out!" Aunt Zhao called out as she jogged over to Ye Fangfei.
It was Sunday, and Ye Fangfei was off work, busy preparing pig offal at home.
"Auntie, who told you? Who got caught?" Ye Fangfei immediately thought of what Yao Feixue had mentioned a couple of days ago about Ma Lianfa and the young widow.
"I don't know who it is, but I heard he was cornered in bed by his brothers-in-law. This matter is bound to escalate," Aunt Zhao replied.
"Alright, Auntie, let's go!" Ye Fangfei said as she picked up her little mooncake.
As they stepped out, they ran into other neighbors from the courtyard, including Old Lady Ma.
When they reached the front alley, the crowd had grown even larger.
"Aunt Zhao, you’re here too? I heard that those two cheating lovers got beaten badly."
"Do you know who it is? I heard it's from your courtyard," one woman who knew Aunt Zhao asked.
"I don’t know! Who told you it was from our place?" Aunt Zhao asked in surprise.
"I just heard it from them. Not sure if it's true."
"Oh, I heard that this young widow is pregnant—said it's a boy," another person chimed in.
"I’ve never liked that young widow; she’s always flirting around. She looks at men like they’re bait," someone else added.
"Exactly! I heard she’s not just with one man; people from her courtyard say there have been at least five men coming and going."
As they walked along, more and more people joined them from nearby courtyards.
By the time they entered the yard, Ma Lianfa and the young widow had already been dragged into the courtyard.
Madam Zhao pulled Ye Fangfei and squeezed her way inside. At that moment, Old Lady Ma had already managed to get in. As soon as she entered, she saw her son, Ma Lianfa, being held by Old Lady Ma, who was crying.
Is that really Ma Lianfa? If it weren't for Old Lady Ma holding him and crying, Ye Fangfei wouldn't have recognized the pig-headed face before her as Ma Lianfa.
"Son, tell your mother who did this to you?" She glared fiercely at the three brothers of Zhou Xiaolin.

Old Lady Ma wasn't foolish; she had heard rumors about someone getting caught for illicit activities and had come to see the commotion. She never expected to find her son beaten and bruised, sitting in the courtyard. Beside him was a disheveled woman. There was no room for misunderstanding.
"In-laws, let's talk this over. Lianfa was just momentarily confused; how could you be so harsh?" Old Lady Ma didn't dare to lash out at Old Man Zhou directly.
"Don't call us in-laws; we can't afford that title. Our Xiaoying has already decided to divorce Ma Lianfa. Our family is rooted in honest peasant stock for eight generations; we must distance ourselves from this ruffian," Old Man Zhou stated firmly.
Just then, a voice from outside shouted, "What's going on here? Who's causing trouble?"
