A group of Red Guards was wandering the streets when they heard that something had happened here, so they hurried over. They were not good people; they were all troublemakers. Soon, they became known as the Red Guards, running rampant on the streets every day.
When people saw the Red Guards approaching, they all stepped back. Everyone was just trying to get by, and no one wanted to provoke them. The Red Guards paid no attention to anyone else and moved in to see two disheveled individuals sitting on the ground. It was clear that these two were involved in some scandalous affair.
The leader of the Red Guards waved his hand and ordered, "Take them away." A few Red Guards surged forward, grabbing Ma Lianfa and the young widow, preparing to drag them off.
When Ma Lianfa's mother saw them trying to take her son away, she let out a cry and rushed forward. "Let go! Let go! Release my son!" She slapped and pulled at the two Red Guards holding onto Ma Lianfa.
"Get lost, old woman!" The Red Guards were ruthless, and one of them kicked Ma Lianfa's mother down to the ground.
A few of the Red Guards, acting like bandits, dragged the two away while onlookers stepped aside to give them room. Ma Lianfa's mother clutched her chest in fear and dared not speak up as she watched the Red Guards take her son further away.
Once the Red Guards were out of sight, the crowd finally felt safe enough to talk among themselves.
"Oh my goodness! That scared me to death! I didn't even dare to breathe loudly just now."
"Who can blame you? These people are always shouting and causing trouble, constantly criticizing this person or that one."
"Now that the young widow and Ma Lianfa have fallen into their hands, it won't end well for them."
"They deserve it! If you ask me, someone should really teach them a lesson."
"If we don't deal with them properly now, they'll just keep acting like this in the future!"
After exchanging a few more comments, the crowd dispersed in small groups. With the main characters taken away, there was no longer any excitement to watch. They still had plenty of chores waiting for them back home.
The Zhou family was also stunned by this turn of events. They never expected that this situation would attract the attention of the Red Guards.
They suspected that Ma Lianfa was behind this incident, and it was certain that he wouldn't be able to keep his job. The factory would definitely not want a troublemaker with a problematic mindset.
Zhou Xiaoying took the children to the factory to plead with the leaders, knowing that there was a high probability that the consequences of Ma Lianfa's actions would fall on her. Zhou Xiaoying had initially been a temporary worker, but if she took the blame for Ma Lianfa, she would become a permanent employee. Being a permanent worker came with many more benefits than being temporary. This way, Zhou Xiaoying wouldn’t have to worry about raising her three daughters in the future.
"What should we do now?" Zhou Xiaoying's mother asked.
"Let's go back to Xiaoying's house first and discuss it," Zhou Laodai said, feeling uncertain about what to do next.
They could only return home for now.
As the Zhou family prepared to leave, Old Lady Ma had finally regained her composure. She suddenly stood up and pleaded, "Xiaoying, please save my eldest son. Xiaoying, no matter what, he is your man; you can't just stand by and watch him die!"
Before Zhou Xiaoying could respond, her mother stepped in front of her protectively. "Now you remember our Xiaoying? Let me tell you, it's too late. Our Xiaoying is going to divorce Ma Lianfa; your son has committed a crime and will be waiting for a long time in prison."
"Xiaoying, you have to say something! You can't just abandon Lianfa! Think of the three children!" Old Lady Ma urged, pushing Ma Jinhua forward. "Jinhua, quickly tell your mother to help your father!"
