"No, you need to pay to find Ma Lianfa," Zhou Xiaoying said with a stern face.
"Don't act like you're above it all. My brother works so hard; how could he possibly be out of money?"
I spoke calmly, but when he refused to listen, I warned him not to blame me for being rude. With that, Ma La'er kicked the door.
Zhou Xiaoying's door was just a regular wooden one, held shut by a simple latch inside. Ma La'er’s kick sent the door flying open.
Inside the room, Ma Jinhua was crouched down with her two younger sisters, listening intently to the commotion outside.
With that kick, Ma La'er pushed them right out.
"Ah!"
"Woo woo woo, it hurts!"
Seeing the children fall, Zhou Xiaoying rushed in immediately.
"Yindi, what happened? Did you hurt yourself? Tell Mom!" She quickly picked up the youngest, Yindi.
"Mom, woo woo woo, my head hurts," Yindi cried out.
Zhou Xiaoying reached up and felt a large bump on the back of Yindi's head.
"It’s okay, Mom will rub it for you. Jinhua, Yinhua, are you alright?"
"I'm fine, Mom."
"Me too."
Jinhua and Yinhua had already gotten back on their feet and were stretching their limbs. Thankfully it was winter and they were bundled up; if this had happened in summer, they would surely have scraped their legs.
Seeing that her two older daughters were fine, Zhou Xiaoying let out a sigh of relief. But then she turned and charged at Ma La'er.
"You beast! I'm going to fight you!" Zhou Xiaoying reached out and scratched Ma La'er.
"What are you doing?" Ma La'er stepped back slightly.
But he couldn’t escape; Zhou Xiaoying managed to scratch his face three times.
Seeing her son getting hurt, Ma Laotai let out a cry and lunged at Zhou Xiaoying.
Madam Ma was no stranger to fighting. She grabbed Zhou Xiaoying's hair and yanked it down with all her might.
"You dare to hit my son? I'll tear you apart!" Madam Ma shouted, pulling Zhou Xiaoying's hair with one hand while striking her with the other.
In the past, Zhou Xiaoying had refrained from retaliating out of respect for her mother-in-law, but now that she was divorced from Ma Lianfa, she no longer felt the need to hold back.
"Let go of me, you old hag!" Zhou Xiaoying exclaimed, retaliating by grabbing Madam Ma's hair in return.
When women fight, it often comes down to hair-pulling, scratching, and clawing. Although Zhou Xiaoying was not to be underestimated, she lacked the experience that Madam Ma had.
She could only hold onto Madam Ma's hair while trying to slap her face with her other hand. However, Madam Ma was far more seasoned; with one hand gripping Zhou Xiaoying's hair, the other targeted sensitive areas of Zhou Xiaoying’s body—places that were both painful and embarrassing to strike.
Moreover, having worked in the fields for years, Madam Ma had much more strength than Zhou Xiaoying. Before long, Zhou Xiaoying found herself pinned down and being beaten by Madam Ma.
What seemed like a slow unfolding of events actually happened in an instant. By the time Tian Guihua and the two street office staff members she had brought along realized what was happening, Madam Ma and Zhou Xiaoying were already locked in combat.
"What are you doing? Break it up!" Tian Guihua rushed forward to intervene.
However, she couldn't separate them on her own and shouted for her two subordinates, "Xiao Wang! Xiao Zhao! Hurry up and help me pull them apart!"
Both Zhou Xiaoying and Madam Ma were fighting fiercely, and even the three of them combined struggled to separate them.
