As the mother and daughter chatted, they quickly wrapped dumplings, finishing off more than two dozen before noon.
"Mom, look at these two little ones. I'll make a couple of small dishes for lunch, and let Zhi have a drink with Dad," Ye Fangfei said as she cleaned up the countertop and rolling pin in the kitchen.
"No need for that. What small dishes? You still have to work this afternoon. What are you drinking for?"
"Besides, having these meat dumplings is already quite enough. If we really must drink, we can just have it with the dumplings," Hao Chunying chimed in, helping to tidy up.
"It's fine; it won't take much effort," Ye Fangfei smiled as she headed into the kitchen.
Indeed, it didn’t take much effort. She soaked a handful of wood ear mushrooms, chopped an onion, added some dried shrimp, mixed in soy sauce and vinegar, and just like that, she had a delicious little dish ready.
Next, she fried a plate of peanuts and took out two homemade sausages from the pantry.
At noon, Tang Zhi entered the house with Ye Jianguo.
They didn’t work at the same factory, so it was unlikely they would leave work together; they had simply bumped into each other at the alleyway.
"Off work! Come on in; we’re about to eat," Ye Fangfei said with a smile as she saw the men enter.
"Zhi mentioned this morning that you were making dumplings for lunch, so our whole family came to eat," Ye Jianguo said happily.
"I told my coworkers I was going to my daughter’s place for dumplings at noon; they were all envious," he added with a grin.
"Alright then! You’ve been showing off again, haven’t you?" Hao Chunying laughed.
"What’s wrong with showing off? Who told me I have such a wonderful daughter? And I found a good son-in-law too!" Ye Jianguo replied proudly.
"My son-in-law often brings me cigarettes and liquor; who else’s daughter does that?" he continued, swelling with pride.
Hao Chunying chuckled at his antics and turned to Ye Fangfei and Tang Zhi. "Your dad is always bragging outside."
"Every time he goes out, he takes half a pack of cigarettes with him but never smokes them; he just wants to show off," Tang Zhi added with a laugh.
Ye Fangfei and Tang Zhi both found this old man quite amusing.
"Dad, why don’t you go rest inside for a bit? Zhi, can you make some tea for Dad? I’ll boil the dumplings," she instructed.
"By the way, why hasn’t my brother come yet?" Ye Fangfei asked.
"Your brother's workplace is far from here; we might have to wait a bit longer," Hao Chunying replied after checking the time.
"Alright then, I’ll start boiling the dumplings. We can eat as soon as my brother gets back," Ye Fangfei said as she headed into the kitchen.
Inside the house, Tang Zhi took out his treasured tea leaves and brewed a pot of tea, pouring a cup for his father-in-law and mother-in-law.
Hao Chunying was cradling little Yueyue, soothing her, while Tang Zhi finished pouring the tea and then took the child into his arms.
"Mom, let me hold Yueyue. You take a break and have some tea," he said, reaching out for his daughter.
"I'll hold her. You've been working all day; sit down and rest," Hao Chunying replied.
With his mother-in-law's concern for him, Tang Zhi didn’t refuse. He played with the little girl for a moment before chatting with his father-in-law.
In the kitchen, Ye Fangfei had already put the dumplings in the pot.
At that moment, Ye Zijun also came home from work.
"Oh, the dumplings are already in the pot?" Knowing that Ye Zijun was coming, the front door had been left open, allowing him to walk right in.
"You're just in time; we're about to eat," Ye Fangfei called out from the kitchen.
Hearing that Ye Zijun had arrived, Tang Zhi went out to greet him. "Big Brother, you're here! Come on in."
He ushered Ye Zijun into the house and poured him a cup of tea. "Big Brother, have some tea."
Ye Zijun took the teacup and set it on the table, then pulled out a piece of soft yellow velvet fabric from his backpack.
