Tang Zhicheng looked at the big and small figures lying on the kang, his heart swelling with joy, feeling that this was his entire world. He sat on the edge of the kang for a while, then tucked in the corners of the quilt for the two of them before he began to clean up the remnants of the meal.
He washed all the dishes and put the leftovers into the cupboard. After wiping down the table and sweeping the floor, he made sure both inside and outside were tidy. Finally, he went back in to cuddle with his wife and daughter for a nap.
He slept until around three o'clock when he was startled awake by his daughter's soft sounds. Opening his eyes, he reached out and realized she had wet herself. He quickly got up to change her diaper.
After changing her, he noticed his wife was still sound asleep, so he didn't wake Ye Fangfei to feed the baby. Instead, he prepared some formula for their little one. Little Yue Liang was a good child; as long as she wasn't hungry or wet, she hardly cried.
Once he had tidied her up, he placed her back on the kang and covered her with a small quilt. "Little one, stay with Mommy; Daddy is going to make dumplings for us," Tang Zhicheng whispered softly.
"Ah, ah," Little Yue Liang thought Tang Zhicheng was playing with her and responded with a grin.
"Alright, you stay here with Mommy while Daddy makes the dough," Tang Zhicheng said before heading to the kitchen to get to work.
Tonight's dumplings would have two fillings: one with cabbage and meat, and another with pickled vegetables and pork cracklings. Tang Zhicheng first prepared the dough and then started chopping the filling.
When Ye Fangfei woke up, she saw that Tang Zhicheng had already wrapped most of the dumplings. Little Yue Liang was wide awake beside her, playing by herself. The small quilt had been kicked off by her little feet.
Ye Fangfei quickly sat up and covered her again, gently stroking her little face. "How is Little Yue Liang so well-behaved? Not crying at all while keeping Mommy company."
"Where's Daddy?" she asked.
"I'm in the kitchen making dumplings," Tang Zhicheng called out from the kitchen, listening to the sounds in the room.
"Why didn't you call me? Just wait; I'll change Little Yue Liang's diaper and help you," Ye Fangfei replied.
"No need! I'm almost done wrapping them," Tang Zhicheng shouted back. "You just keep an eye on Little Yue Liang."
Despite his insistence, Ye Fangfei changed their daughter’s diaper, fed her, and eventually joined Tang Zhicheng in the kitchen to help wrap dumplings together.
"Why are we making so many? Just the two of us can eat fifty dumplings, and that would be more than enough," Ye Fangfei said, looking at the two trays of dumplings with a hint of surprise.
"Well, I just counted. There are about ten in each tray, and there are still more than twenty that haven't been wrapped yet," Tang Zhicheng replied. "Altogether, that's over thirty. I also wrapped the dumplings for dinner."
"I was thinking, since we have our new house now, we should take a look and tidy it up a bit. I was considering buying some disinfectant to spray around. Even though Liu and the others are particular about cleanliness, it's better to be safe than sorry. What do you think?" he continued.
"Yes, we don’t need to go out for New Year’s greetings; it’s perfect timing to clean up the new house. If you ask me, we shouldn’t even go back for lunch. Let’s just take the dumplings over there and cook them," Ye Fangfei suggested.
"This can count as warming up our new home," she added in agreement.
"Right! Since it's a warming-up occasion, we can't just have dumplings. I'll make a couple of nice dishes to bring along too. We should have a proper meal," Tang Zhicheng said.
"Oh, and let's keep the news about buying the house to ourselves. Just the two of us should know," Ye Fangfei reminded him as she recalled something important.
