"Well, let's keep our house purchase to ourselves. Just the two of us should know about it. Not even my family should be told, understood?" Ye Fangfei reminded him.
"Why is that? Buying a house is a good thing; it's not like we've done anything shameful. What's there to hide?" Tang Zhicheng asked, puzzled.
"Think about it. Everyone is in need of housing, including my family. As the saying goes, it's not about having little but about having uneven distribution. Tang Zhicheng pondered for a moment and realized that Ye Fangfei had a point. There are always those who can't stand to see others doing well. Although their paperwork for the house was all in order, he worried that others might investigate his income sources.
On paper, even with his veteran's benefits added in, his income wasn't enough to afford a house costing several thousand.
With this thought, Tang Zhicheng nodded seriously, "You're right, dear. We need to be cautious."
"We're not in a hurry to move anyway; living here is just fine. Our workplaces are close by," he continued. "Let the new house sit empty for now, but if it stays unoccupied for too long, it might fall into disrepair. We can spend a night there on our days off."
"And the yard—it's a shame to leave it empty. When summer comes, we can clear it up and plant some vegetables and sweet potatoes. That way, we won't have to buy groceries and can even dry some sweet potatoes for snacks." Ye Fangfei was eager at the thought of growing her own food, wishing summer would come immediately.
"Alright, I’ll get the land ready when I have time," Tang Zhicheng replied.
"This yard will be great for us; we’ll finally have fresh vegetables."
"By the way, what do you plan to do with the bicycle and sewing machine over there?" he asked.
"We already have those here; we don't need them there," Tang Zhicheng said.
Ye Fangfei suggested, "Why don't you see if anyone wants to buy them? They’re just sitting there unused. If someone wants them, we can sell them."
"Nowadays, when people get married, they want the three major items. It's hard to get tickets for big items like that; I think second-hand ones could still sell well."
"But if we only get a little out of it, let's just keep them," she added.
"Sure, I'll ask around. I think someone would definitely want them; a new sewing machine costs over two hundred with tickets," Tang Zhicheng said.
"I saw that sewing machine; although it's not brand new, it's still about fifty to sixty percent new. Selling it for a bit over a hundred should be easy."
"The bicycle too; even though it's old, it should still fetch at least a dollar," he concluded.
Ye Fangfei then asked curiously, "What does Liu Ge do? If he doesn’t want the sewing machine or bicycle, then let’s just forget about it."
It seems that they are not lacking in money, and with the current tight situation, having a way to get out indicates that their family is not simple at all.
Tang Zhicheng said, "I don't really know what Liu Ge's family does specifically. I've only known Liu Ge for a short time; it was Chengcai who introduced us. I haven't had much interaction with him, just helped him transport things a couple of times. However, Liu Ge is quite generous; he always pays a good amount for the shipping fees."
Why are drivers like Tang Zhicheng so popular? It's because their job offers great convenience. Besides being able to transport goods across the country that others struggle to handle, they can also help people move items for some extra cash—of course, this has to be done discreetly.
Ye Fangfei pondered, "Chengcai and Liu Ge are distant relatives. Aren't they afraid of being targeted by the Red Guards? Why isn't Chengcai worried?" She found this point hard to understand. Since they are relatives, their backgrounds should be similar. After all, Chengcai seems to come from a decent family, and being a procurement officer at a meat processing plant isn't an easy position to secure unless one has strong connections.
