In the afternoon, Ye Fangfei was playing with her daughter on the warm kang. However, Tang Zhi was not so fortunate to have a leisurely day. Just yesterday, it had snowed, and he had spent the day clearing the snow off the roof and piling it up against the wall in the yard.
He worked tirelessly until dusk before their family of three finally returned home to their shared courtyard. Once inside, Ye Fangfei urged Tang Zhi to rest while she prepared dinner.
"Wash up and take a break. I'll cook. What do you want to eat?" she asked.
Tang Zhi was indeed exhausted and felt a wave of regret wash over him. Why had he suggested tidying up their new house during the New Year? Was he out of his mind? It was the first day of the New Year, and he had worn himself out.
But it was his own suggestion, and besides, the snow at the new house really needed to be cleared. Although their new home was spacious, cleaning it was quite laborious.
"Alright, I'll take a break. How about you make some noodles? I’m craving something warm," he replied, thinking about how cold it was outside.
"Sure, you rest on the kang and keep an eye on our daughter while I cook," Ye Fangfei said as she placed their daughter on the kang.
Having a child meant that no matter what they did, one person always had to stay with her.
After washing his hands and face, Tang Zhi joined his daughter on the kang to play with her. Meanwhile, Ye Fangfei was in the kitchen kneading dough and rolling out noodles. She also sliced some meat to prepare stir-fried noodles.
The next day was a special day for her family. After finishing dinner, the couple tucked their daughter in early for bed.
On the following morning, Ye Fangfei and Tang Zhi woke up early, bringing along the prepared New Year gifts for her family. The courtyard was lively that day; married daughters had come back to their families with their husbands and children.
As they met people, everyone greeted each other with smiles and exchanged New Year wishes.
“Happy New Year, Uncle Zhao!”
“Happy New Year, Uncle Liang! Wishing you well!”
“Happy New Year, Aunt Sun!”
“Oh, Feifei is here! Happy New Year!”
“Happy New Year! Happy New Year!”
As Ye Fangfei entered the courtyard, she greeted the old neighbors warmly.
Ye Jianguo and Hao Chunying had been waiting for her and the others. Hearing the commotion outside, they quickly came out to welcome them.
"Feifei, you’re here! It must have been freezing on the way. Come in quickly!" Hao Chunying stepped forward to hug Little Yuanyuan.
"Come on, let’s go inside," Ye Jianguo added, following suit.
"Auntie, Auntie, you’re here!" Ye Ting ran out to greet her.
"Yes, let’s go inside. I’ve brought you some treats," Ye Fangfei said, ruffling Ye Ting's hair affectionately.
Once the family was inside, Ye Fangfei began to unpack the items she had brought. There were two bottles of fine wine for her father, some snacks for Hao Chunying, and a big bag of White Rabbit milk candies and canned meat for Ye Ting, along with a box of small firecrackers.
"Auntie, are all these for me?" Ye Ting asked excitedly.
"Tingting, don’t forget to wish your aunt and uncle a happy New Year! Have you done that yet?" At that moment, Ye Zijun walked in from outside.
"Oh, Happy New Year, Auntie! Happy New Year, Uncle!" Ye Ting was quick to respond, showing his cleverness.
"Good! Happy New Year to you too, Tingting. Here, this is your lucky money from your aunt and uncle." Tang Zhi took out two red envelopes.
