At that moment, the small car had arrived at their doorstep. Fortunately, the alley was wide enough; otherwise, the car might not have been able to get through.
Gu Jincheng was the first to open the car door and step out. He saw Tang Zhi and excitedly called out, "Squad Leader!"
Tang Zhi also greeted him with enthusiasm, and the two embraced briefly before exchanging playful punches.
"You finally made it! Your sister-in-law and I have been waiting for you for ages. Come on in!" Tang Zhi said with a beaming smile.
"This must be Sister-in-law, right? Hello, I'm Gu Jincheng. You can call me Jincheng or Little Gu," Gu Jincheng turned to Ye Fangfei and said.
"Hello, Little Gu! Welcome to our home. Please, come inside," Ye Fangfei replied with a warm smile.
"Sure, let me grab a few things," Gu Jincheng said as he turned to open the back door of the car and pulled out several large bags.
"What’s with all the stuff? You could have just come without bringing anything," Tang Zhi said as he stepped forward to take one of the bags from him, leading Gu Jincheng towards the yard.
Ye Fangfei also wanted to help with a bag but was dodged by Gu Jincheng. "Sister-in-law, I can handle it. No need to be polite."
"Squad Leader and I are like brothers; he even saved my life back then!" Gu Jincheng added.
"What Squad Leader? I’m not used to that; just call me Old Tang," Tang Zhi corrected him.
Gu Jincheng chuckled, "This isn’t my first time meeting Sister-in-law; I wanted to make a good impression. Why are you so eager to expose me?"
"Enough of that! You know what kind of person you are. Can you be serious for three minutes?" Tang Zhi teased him.
"Hey, what’s with you, Tang? Why can’t I be serious? Am I supposed to walk around with a frown like you?" Gu Jincheng shot back, lightening up at Tang Zhi's jab.
Ye Fangfei watched the two banter back and forth, noticing how well they got along.
Once inside, he placed the bags on the table. Ye Fangfei hurriedly poured tea for him and brought out sunflower seeds, candy, and walnuts with pine nuts sent from her hometown.
"Here, have some tea and snacks. These walnuts and pine nuts are from Zhi's hometown. Try them and see how they taste!" Ye Fangfei said warmly.
"Sister-in-law, please don’t fuss over me; I can manage myself," Gu Jincheng quickly replied as he noticed Ye Fangfei bustling about.
"Alright then, you two catch up while I prepare dinner," Ye Fangfei said, knowing that they hadn’t seen each other in a long time and would have plenty to talk about as she headed into the kitchen.
"Honey, I'll help you later," Tang Zhi said, though he was excited to see his comrade; he didn’t want to tire out his wife.
"No need! You haven’t seen Little Gu in ages; go ahead and chat. I’ll manage on my own," Ye Fangfei smiled back at him.
Tang Zhi felt a pang of concern for her but appreciated her willingness to let the men bond.
Tang Zhi's comrade had come to visit after a long time, and she couldn't possibly make him work in front of her friend; after all, a man's pride had to be upheld. However, after saying this, Tang Zhi no longer insisted. "Alright then, today we'll put the burden on my wife."
Tang Zhi wasn't worried about losing face in front of his comrade; he knew that everything in the kitchen was prepared, and all Ye Fangfei had to do was stir-fry the dishes.
"Thanks for your hard work, Sister-in-law," Gu Jincheng chimed in.
"It's no trouble at all; you two just sit back," Ye Fangfei replied as she headed into the kitchen.
Inside the kitchen, all the ingredients were already chopped and ready. Ye Fangfei immediately began to stir-fry. They had prepared a particularly lavish spread to entertain Gu Jincheng. There were four cold dishes alone.
One platter featured braised meat, another had sausages, a third was a salad of pickled cabbage hearts to cut through the richness, and the last was a dish of cold lotus root slices, which were given by Hao Chunying from the Ye family just yesterday—perfect for serving guests today.
There were also four hot dishes: shredded pork in Beijing sauce, Mu Shu pork, Kung Pao chicken, and stir-fried garlic shoots with cured meat. The highlight was the large pork knuckle that had been stewed before the New Year; they hadn’t wanted to eat it then but decided to steam it for this occasion.
