"Zhicheng, Xiaogu, it's time to eat!" Ye Fangfei called out as she brought the last dish to the table.
"Coming!" Tang Zhicheng replied.
He then turned to Gu Jincheng and said, "Let's go eat. Your sister-in-law's cooking is quite good; you should give it a try."
"Old Tang, how did you get so lucky? Just looking at your sister-in-law, I can tell she's someone who knows how to manage a household," Gu Jincheng remarked.
"You must have some incredible luck. Your sister-in-law is young and beautiful, and she cooks well too—she's even seven or eight years younger than you. And she gave you such a lovely little daughter. How did you end up with such a fortune?" Gu Jincheng said enviously.
"Hehe, you can't compare. My wife is just like that, and my daughter is just as adorable," Tang Zhicheng said proudly.
He could maintain his composure in front of others, but in front of Gu Jincheng, he couldn't help but let slip a few playful remarks.
When they reached the dining table, Gu Jincheng looked at the spread of dishes and expressed his gratitude. "Sister-in-law, why did you make so many dishes? I'm not an outsider; I could have just had a little."
Gu Jincheng hadn't expected Ye Fangfei to prepare so much food. Even in his own home, which was relatively well-off, they would only prepare about this much for the New Year.
"Oh, it's nothing. I knew you were coming, and Zhicheng was so happy," Ye Fangfei replied.
"Enough of that; sit down quickly. I'll get you some drinks so we can toast," she added as she went to fetch the wine.
"Here, let me pour you some," Tang Zhicheng said as he took the bottle and filled Gu Jincheng's glass.
Seeing them starting to drink, Ye Fangfei thought about going inside to check on her daughter.
Noticing she was about to leave, Tang Zhicheng quickly called out, "Wife, where are you going? Sit down and eat with us."
"Yes, Sister-in-law, please join us," Gu Jincheng added.
"No need; you all enjoy yourselves first. I'm just going to check on the baby," Ye Fangfei smiled and declined.
"Your wife can go; the baby is asleep and doesn't need checking. You've been busy all day; just eat first," Tang Zhicheng said as he pulled her down beside him.
He then served her a bowl of rice and brought it over. "Wife, eat while it's hot. After you're done, go rest."
"We'll take our time drinking and chatting later; I'll clean up the dishes afterward."
Ye Fangfei had initially planned to give Tang Zhicheng some face, but since he insisted so much, she decided not to decline any further and sat down to eat with them.
"Wife, have some of this pork knuckle; let me get you a piece of lean meat." Tang Zhicheng took care of Ye Fangfei while drinking with Gu Jincheng.
"You should eat too," Ye Fangfei thought it was sweet that Tang Zhicheng still looked out for her at that moment.
"Dear wife, this Beijing-style shredded pork you made is delicious. How is it, Old Gu? Isn't my wife's cooking great?" Tang Zhicheng said while eating, not forgetting to praise his wife.
Ye Fangfei felt a bit embarrassed by his words, but she still picked up a piece of the shredded pork and placed it in his bowl. "Eat more if you like it."
Gu Jincheng watched them with a pained expression; seeing Tang Zhicheng act this way made him feel uncomfortable.
"Alright, you two. After being married for so long, do you still have to be so lovey-dovey? Are you going to let me eat in peace?" Gu Jincheng exclaimed.
Tang Zhicheng kicked him under the table. "Get lost! I think you're just jealous that I have a wife."
"By the way, didn't you say you were coming back to meet someone? How did that go? I thought you'd bring someone along."
"Oh, don't even mention it. This time my mom introduced me to the daughter of her old friend."
