Time flies quickly, and in the blink of an eye, it was already the end of July.
Tang Zhi and Ye Fangfei were living a comfortable life. Ye Fangfei worked diligently at the department store, where she would occasionally buy any defective items that didn't require tickets, regardless of whether they were needed at home. She would purchase items that her family didn’t use and sell them, which brought in a little extra income.
In fact, it wasn't just her; most of the employees at the department store did the same. For instance, fabrics could be used to make new clothes, and who wouldn’t want more new clothes? However, items like enamel basins and kettles were different. An enamel basin might not last a lifetime, but it could certainly last for several years. So, any surplus at home could be exchanged for some cash or other necessities.
Tang Zhi had also been busy trading items. After buying their house, he had managed to increase his savings from just over a hundred to four digits. Now, there was more than fourteen hundred yuan in their bank account.
“Daddy! Daddy!” Little Moonlight saw Tang Zhi coming and ran out with her small mouth calling for him.
“Hey, slow down, sweetheart! Be careful not to fall!” Tang Zhi hurriedly took a couple of steps forward and squatted down to catch her in his arms.
Little Moonlight was already over a year old. Although she couldn’t speak much yet, she could clearly call out for her mom and dad.
“Sweetheart, did you miss Daddy? Look what I brought you!” Tang Zhi showed her what he had in his hands.
Today, he had helped out at the canning factory. After a long day of work, they rewarded him with two boxes of canned goods—one box of peach cans and another box of meat cans, each containing ten cans.
Before entering the house, he had already moved the cans to the storage room but opened one box of peaches to take out a can for Ye Fangfei and Little Moonlight.
Little Moonlight didn’t know how to say “canned food,” but she recognized that it was something delicious. She couldn’t express much else; she just kept calling out, “Daddy! Daddy!”
“Alright, alright! Daddy knows! Let’s go find Mommy and eat together, okay?” Tang Zhi said as he picked up his daughter.
At that moment, Ye Fangfei came out of the kitchen holding a bowl. “I’m here! Just in time for dinner.”
"Alright, dear, open the can. Let's have it for dinner tonight." Tang Zhi replied and handed the can to Ye Fangfei.
"Oh? Where did this can come from? I remember we ran out of food stamps at home," Ye Fangfei said, her eyes lighting up at the sight of the peach can.
This winter has been particularly dry, and if they could have a can of fruit, it would be a delightful treat. However, canned goods weren't something one could easily buy; they required both money and stamps.
"It's not for sale. I helped out at the canning factory today, and they gave it to me," Tang Zhi explained while washing his hands. "Originally, I was supposed to get a whole box of peach cans, but the factory manager asked me to run some errands for him, so he gave me an extra box of meat cans."
"I've put everything in the storage room for us to enjoy slowly," he added.
"Mama, eat! Mama, eat!" Little Yueyue tugged at Ye Fangfei's pants as she watched her parents talk, hoping someone would give her something tasty.
"Okay, Mama will open a can for you, you little glutton," Ye Fangfei said, playfully pinching her daughter's small nose.
"Mama, eat!" The child had her own way of expressing her desire for food and pulled on Ye Fangfei's pants as she headed toward the kitchen.
