"What? They don't agree? Why wouldn't they agree? My daughter, a well-bred girl, is marrying their son, who is on his second marriage. All she wants is a job; how can they not be willing?" Luo Yawen's sister-in-law exclaimed in surprise.
Her loud voice drew the attention of others in the house.
"Mom, what's going on? Is it the Ye family that doesn't agree?" Luo Mei was inside the house; although she didn't come out, she could still hear what was happening.
"What? They aren't willing? My sister is a well-bred girl, and he’s on his second marriage—how can he not be happy about this?" Luo Mei's brother chimed in.
Luo Yawen felt speechless, thinking they really had no sense of the situation. Ye Zijun, apart from having been married once and having a child, truly had no other flaws. He was tall, had a stable job, and both his parents were employed with decent jobs. Their home was spacious.
In contrast, what about Luo Mei? She was of average height and nothing special. She had only graduated from elementary school and was facing the prospect of going back to the countryside without a job. Their family couldn't even compare to the Ye family.
And yet they thought they were something extraordinary?
Luo Yawen grew impatient with their chatter and said directly, "Forget it about Mei Zi; they don't agree. I've conveyed the message; I'm leaving now."
As she turned to leave, her sister-in-law grabbed her arm. "Wait, Yawen! You can't just leave like this! Tell me why their family doesn't agree. This is your niece; you can't just ignore her."
"Why don't you think about it? You all want such a high bride price, and they've already agreed to that. Now you want them to provide jobs too? That's fine, but you can't expect them to take care of your child as well. They aren't fools. If it weren't for the child or if Ye Zijun wasn't on his second marriage, would a well-bred girl want to marry him?" Luo Yawen replied.
To be honest, Luo Yawen didn't really care much for her maternal family’s affairs. She and her sister-in-law didn’t get along well; if it weren't for her elder brother personally asking her for help and the fact that Luo Mei was her niece, she wouldn't bother with this matter at all.
"Isn't it obvious? They only have one son; eventually, that job will still belong to him and his wife. Wouldn't it make sense for her to give up her job early and stay home to take care of the child?" Luo Yawen's sister-in-law seemed to lack confidence in her argument.
"Come on! If it were you, would you be willing to give your job to your daughter-in-law?" Luo Yawen asked.
"Of course not! I work hard for my money; how could I just hand my job over to someone else?" Her sister-in-law blurted out.
Luo Yawen looked at her with a mocking expression. "If you aren't willing yourself, why would you expect others to be?"
"Aunt, please talk to them again. I was wrong before; I don't want to work anymore, and I can take care of the child." Luo Mei felt anxious when she heard that the man was unwilling.
She realized she had miscalculated. They weren't even married yet, and it was indeed inappropriate to make such demands. Once they were married, she could charm her husband and mother-in-law; the household matters would then be under her control.
As for that little brat, she could manage him just fine. After all, if he turned out spoiled, it would still be her decision. Once she secured a job and gave her husband two sons, that little one could be neglected; as long as he got enough to eat, he wouldn't starve.
Luo Yawen had no idea of Luo Mei's thoughts. However, she didn't want to deal with this troublesome matter anymore. She had just had a falling out with Hao Chunying, and there was no way she would go back to her and apologize.
Not even for her niece. Still, she couldn't help but speak to her niece: "Meizi, since he isn't interested, let's just let it go. We're the women here; we shouldn't be the ones chasing after them."
