By the way, when you come back, bring a basket of sweet potatoes. Let's roast some. Ye Fangfei suddenly craved roasted sweet potatoes.
The land in the yard had been cultivated; the area that used to grow flowers was now planted with corn, sweet potatoes, and peanuts by Ye Fangfei and Tang Zhi.
Since they planted the corn and peanuts early, they harvested them early as well. After the grains were collected, they would plant radishes.
Thus, their family never bought vegetables for the New Year.
In addition to radishes, Ye Fangfei had also planted several rows of green beans along the wall, a few pumpkins, as well as tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, and peppers.
Throughout the summer, their family never lacked vegetables to eat.
They had a cellar here, so they stored sweet potatoes and radishes in it.
After all, they would come over in a few days to light the stove and ventilate the place. It would be convenient to take things back then.
"Alright, we only have one vegetable left at home. I'll bring back a few more," Tang Zhi said. "And I'll take two pumpkins back too. Last time Mom said she wanted pumpkin porridge, so I’ll bring some for her tomorrow."
"Okay, you handle it. Just ride slowly on the way back. Be careful not to fall," Ye Fangfei reminded him.
"I know, I’ll be back soon. I’m just going to add some coal to the stove; you don’t need to come out. The snow is getting heavier outside," Tang Zhi said as he went out.
Once Ye Fangfei saw Tang Zhi leave, she hugged her daughter and continued reading a children’s book.
This book was specially bought by Ye Fangfei for reading to Xiao Yueyue during their leisure time.
"Come on, my dear, let’s continue reading. Little Soldier Zhang Ga sees the enemy in the distance." Xiao Yueyue also enjoyed listening to her mother read and was quite attentive.
Meanwhile, Tang Zhi braved the heavy snow on his bike towards their new house.
Upon entering, he first lit the stove and then began sweeping the yard.
Even though he cleaned every time he came over, leaves and bits of paper still blew in with the wind.
He had to sweep both the front and back yards; as the snow fell heavier, Tang Zhi quickly finished cleaning up.
He then took a basket down to the cellar to gather a basket of sweet potatoes and brought up a couple of vegetables and several radishes.
Back inside, he tossed two pieces of coal into the stove.
Since no one had been living there for a long time, even with the stove lit, it took a while to warm up.
However, Tang Zhi didn’t mind. He was a grown man wearing a military coat; if it was cold, so be it. Besides, he was just here to take a look, not to stay.
He only stayed for about an hour before heading back home. When he arrived, Ye Fangfei and Little Moon were still sitting on the kang, playing.
Seeing Tang Zhi come back, Ye Fangfei hurriedly got up to pour him a cup of hot water. "You’re back! It’s cold outside, right? Hurry and drink some hot water."
Little Moon also climbed down from the kang, clapping her little hands and calling out, "Daddy! Daddy!"
"Hey, sweetie, don’t jump around too much; be careful the kang doesn’t collapse. Sit there and wait for Daddy. I’ll roast some sweet potatoes for you in a bit." Tang Zhi took a sip of hot water, keeping his eyes fixed on Little Moon, afraid she might fall.
"You play with her for a while; I’ll go roast the sweet potatoes. What do you want for dinner tonight? I’ll make it." He had gone to the new house and returned just in time to prepare dinner.
"How about we have pumpkin porridge tonight? I brought back some pumpkin. We can add some red dates; it’ll definitely taste sweet," Tang Zhi suggested.
"Okay, I’ll go make it now. The pumpkin porridge takes a little longer to cook," Ye Fangfei replied.
