Zhao Hongxiu walked in just in time to hear this.
"Well, Feifei just asked me if I willingly married Dali. She thinks too much; of course, I did it willingly. Who could possibly force me?" Ye Fanghua recounted the conversation with her sisters.
Zhao Hongxiu and Hao Chunying exchanged glances, thinking to themselves: Well, there's nothing more to ask. It's clear she wanted this. Since the marriage was her choice, they decided not to pry further.
Instead, they turned to inquire about her in-laws. "Fanghua, how do your in-laws treat you? Are they easy to get along with?"
Mentioning her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law made Ye Fanghua sigh. "Ah, my mother-in-law is just okay, but I can't stand my sisters-in-law. They’re always bickering like a bunch of crows. It never ends."
"They keep an eye on me too. Whenever my family sends me something, their eyes practically penetrate the package to see what's inside, and then they take everything to their own rooms."
"I really wish we could separate households soon."
This was something Zhao Hongxiu and Hao Chunying couldn’t help with either. Hao Chunying was better off; she had already moved out after getting married, effectively separating from her family.
But Zhao Hongxiu, at her age, still lived under the same roof as her mother-in-law. Although her mother-in-law wasn’t a wicked woman and was relatively easy to deal with, it was still not the same as being in charge of her own household.
"Have you ever talked about separating?" Zhao Hongxiu asked. "With so many brothers and sisters-in-law in your family, it would be better to separate sooner rather than later."
"No, they believe in keeping the family together," Ye Fanghua replied. "They don’t separate households. Their situation is better; my grandparents passed away long ago."
"I know a family that truly has four generations living together. They have so many kids that it’s always chaotic—either one is fighting with another or vice versa."
"Their house is always bustling," Ye Fanghua continued.
Ye Fangfei also had some say in this matter since Tang Zhicheng's family was from a rural area and hadn’t separated either.
In the countryside, families rarely split up; staying together helps protect against bullying from outsiders. Plus, it saves on expenses. After all, once you separate, you need to prepare a full set of pots and pans, right?
In the countryside, there are no various tickets for buying these things; without tickets, you can’t purchase them at all.
Without pots and pans, how can one cook? This is part of why many families choose not to separate, Ye Fangfei explained to them.
Indeed, having several sons in the family means that buying these things is quite a significant expense. Not to mention in the countryside; even here, with our iron pot tickets, they aren't just handed out freely, said Hao Chunying.
So what should we do? Does that mean we can't split the family? Zhao Hongxiu was most concerned about whether her daughter could live comfortably.
Sigh, let's just muddle through for now. Although having more people means more issues, it’s still much better than being at the youth station. At least we don’t have to worry about not earning enough to eat, Ye Fanghua thought positively.
While the women were talking, a voice called from outside: "Feifei, Feifei, come out! I need to talk to you!" It was Aunt Ye.
Although Ye Fangfei didn't particularly like Aunt Ye, she couldn't pretend not to hear her. She had no choice but to stand up and say, "Auntie, I'm here. What do you need?"
"Child, can't I look for you if there's nothing going on?" Aunt Ye feigned warmth as she pulled Ye Fangfei closer.
Ye Fangfei fell silent; after all, Aunt Ye would eventually reveal her purpose. Sure enough, before Ye Fangfei could speak again, Aunt Ye said, "Feifei, I heard your husband can get vegetables without tickets. Do you think he could help me out with some?"
"The vegetables at my place are all spoiled and no longer usable."
