"Brother-in-law, I heard you have connections with people from various companies? Wow, that's really impressive!"
Zhao Dali had been chattering away for half an hour.
Tang Zhicheng felt like his ears were about to develop calluses. He couldn't understand what was going on with this cousin-in-law. After dinner, he just sat next to him and kept talking. At first, Tang Zhicheng tried to respond a bit, but soon he lost the desire to engage at all.
It wasn't that Tang Zhicheng looked down on people; he himself came from a rural background, and his parents and siblings were still in the countryside. The main issue was that Zhao Dali spoke in such an exaggerated manner that it was obvious he was trying to strike up a conversation with Tang Zhicheng on purpose. Moreover, he lacked awareness; even Uncle Ye felt embarrassed seeing his son-in-law act this way and had interrupted him several times, but Zhao Dali didn’t seem to care and continued talking.
"Ah, I just help out at the factory by moving goods; I'm not really familiar with them," Tang Zhicheng dared not say he had any close acquaintances. It was clear that Zhao Dali had some ulterior motive for trying to connect with him. He had no intention of getting involved, even if he did have connections.
"That must be better than us, right? If your sister's husband ever needs something from you, you can't just ignore him," Zhao Dali said.
How was Tang Zhicheng supposed to respond to that? He could only smile and let the comment slide without further discussion.
"Brother-in-law, how's the harvest back home? I once drove to Tang and tried their sesame candy; it was delicious." Tang Zhicheng changed the subject.
"You've been to our place? It's not too bad over there, but it can't compare to here," Zhao Dali replied. "Still, we manage to fill our stomachs, though we lack tickets for many things at home."
After saying a couple of sentences, he circled back to his earlier topic.
Tang Zhicheng was exasperated; how could this guy be so oblivious? Uncle Ye also felt helpless; compared to the older son-in-law, this one was lacking in every aspect.
With no other choice, he interrupted: "Dali, why don't you go check if your older brother has returned yet?"
Ye Fangfei's two cousins had gone back with their wives to their father-in-law's house. Today was the day for the married daughter to return home, so they all went along.
"Alright then, brother-in-law, let's chat later," Zhao Dali said reluctantly. However, since his father-in-law had spoken up, he couldn’t refuse.
Watching Zhao Dali leave, Uncle Ye felt a bit embarrassed and said to Tang Zhicheng, "You don't have to pay him any mind."
Tang Zhicheng, despite not liking Zhao Dali, couldn't show it, especially in front of Uncle Ye.
"It's nothing, Uncle. I'm also from the countryside. I understand," Tang Zhicheng said.
Uncle Ye looked at Tang Zhicheng and then thought about Zhao Dali, feeling a sense of admiration for his niece's good fortune.
To find a partner in such a hurried time and escape the fate of going to the countryside was indeed lucky. The key was that this partner was such a good match; one couldn't help but say it was fate smiling upon her.
Unlike his own daughter, who not only went to the countryside but also ended up with a rural son-in-law who was quite lacking in character. He didn't look down on country folks; it was just that his daughter had truly poor taste.
Zhao Dali seemed like someone with big dreams but little substance. He couldn't understand how his daughter could have fallen for someone like him.
"Alas, your cousin isn't having an easy time in the countryside either. Otherwise, she wouldn't have married someone like that so casually," Uncle Ye sighed.
"Getting married is still a good thing; at least there's someone to take care of her over there. It's better than fighting alone," Tang Zhicheng replied.
