According to tradition, the bride's family should send two sets of quilts and make two pieces of clothing for the bride. However, due to the hurried nature of Gao Xiangchun's wedding, there was no time to prepare these items. Even if there had been time, the family lacked enough fabric and cotton tickets. Therefore, Li Xiaomei did not prepare anything special for Gao Xiangchun's dowry.
Although the dowry was not substantial, the groom's family did provide a considerable amount in gifts. If they encountered a greedy family, they would take all the bride price and leave nothing for the dowry. The Gao family was such a family; it was unclear how much money they received, but neither the sewing machine nor the watch had been seen.
"The Gao family is really inconsiderate. They should at least give one of those items—how can they keep everything?" Yao Feixue remarked.
"Doesn't the Gao couple care about their daughter's future life with her in-laws?" Ye Fangfei added.
Both Yao Feixue and Ye Fangfei came from families that cherished their daughters. Not only did they receive all the bride price from their husbands' families, but they also had substantial dowries prepared for them. Therefore, they found it hard to accept how the Gao family handled things.
However, being young and inexperienced, they were still learning about such matters. Zhao Damao, who stood nearby and overheard their conversation, turned to them and said, "Oh, what's so surprising about that? Yao Feixue and Ye Fangfei knew Zhao Damao was speaking the truth. Moreover, there were many families like that. So they chose not to say more as they watched the bride being taken away by her husband. Then they went off to prepare for the banquet.
It was unclear whether it was due to rushed preparations or something else, but the banquet spread was rather disappointing. There was only one meat dish on the table—stir-fried cabbage with meat—and even that had only a few small pieces of meat scattered throughout.
The other dishes included stir-fried shredded potatoes, radish stew with vermicelli, and stir-fried cabbage with dried tofu.
Although times were tough, Ban Xi'er would still do her best to prepare some meat and eggs for the occasion. Unlike the Gao family, who merely put on a show.
It wasn't just Ye Fangfei who thought this way; everyone shared the same sentiment. However, despite the meager offerings, no one felt inclined to waste food; they still enjoyed their meals heartily.
Yet, Ye Fangfei could barely eat a few bites, as the dishes lacked flavor. Moreover, the cold weather had left the food lukewarm by the time it reached the table. Like Ye Fangfei, Yao Feixue also left early.
"Feifei, why don’t you come over to my house for a bit?" Yao Feixue suggested.
"No thanks, Little Moon is sleepy. I need to take her home and get her something to eat before she goes to bed," Ye Fangfei replied.
Little Moon was rubbing her eyes, clearly on the verge of falling asleep.
Ye Fangfei didn’t linger any longer and said goodbye to Tang Zhicheng before heading out.
