At noon, Ye Fangfei hurriedly finished work and went to pick up Xiao Yue Liang, then she picked up her son from Aunt Zhao's house before finally heading home to cook.
With no time for anything complicated, Ye Fangfei heated two steamed buns from the night before, stir-fried some wood ear mushrooms with meat, and steamed a bowl of egg custard for the two children. After the three of them had lunch, she sent the kids off to play in the house while she tidied up the kitchen, washing pots and dishes.
She even took care of the dishes from breakfast. Fortunately, they had plenty of dishes at home; otherwise, it would have been difficult for Ye Fangfei to manage the rotation. By the time she finished cleaning up, it was almost time to go again.
She dropped her son off at Aunt Zhao's house and took her daughter to school before heading back to work.
In the office, Wang Dan was still the early bird. When she saw Ye Fangfei come in, she said, "Xiao Ye, have you heard? This year our annual gifts include blankets from Inner Mongolia. I wonder if they're real?"
"One blanket costs quite a bit! This year the leaders are being generous."
"I haven't heard about it. Where did you get that information?" Ye Fangfei genuinely hadn't heard anything about it.
"I heard it from Jiang He Nian. He said the leaders have been considering this for a while, and now they're ready to ship from Inner Mongolia."
"They want us to go pick them up; I bet your husband will have to drive," Wang Dan said.
"Yeah, their team is especially busy right now. They come back for a day or two and then head out again."
"It's that time of year when all the units need transportation for their goods."
"But there’s an upside: there's plenty of profit to be made."
"No matter which unit they help out with, they always bring something back."
"And it's not just a little bit."
"To put it bluntly, what they give comes from public funds; it's a favor but it's still theirs."
Everyone understands this logic—using public resources for personal favors is common practice. While it may sound harsh, it's simply the truth of the matter.
That's just on the surface; Tang Zhicheng and his crew also have their hidden income streams. For instance, during their recent trip to Haicheng, Tang Zhicheng brought back five hundred yuan. He said he was going to get some goods to sell.
They were all familiar with the ins and outs of the business, having established connections for both receiving and dispatching goods. It’s no wonder that being a truck driver, one of the eight major professions, is considered a good job that is hard to come by these days. Of course, Ye Fangfei wouldn’t share this thought with Wang Dan.
Tang Zhicheng was busy, which meant she had to bear the burden. However, they would finish their accounts in a couple of days, and then there wouldn’t be much left to do. “You can take a couple of days off then,” Wang Dan suggested.
Ye Fangfei nodded. “Yes, I’m really worn out when he’s not home. But it’s just one more week of busyness; Xiao Yueyue has her final exams coming up in a week. I won’t have to rush around picking her up anymore.”
“It’s just that your in-laws live far away; otherwise, they could lend you a hand,” Wang Dan remarked.
“Well, there’s nothing we can do about that,” Ye Fangfei replied dismissively.
Every situation has its pros and cons. While it was true that living far from her in-laws meant they lacked support, it also meant that she and her husband had to manage everything on their own, which was indeed more challenging than for others. However, the benefits were also quite clear.
Firstly, they didn’t have to live under the same roof as her in-laws, allowing them to have their own household and make their own decisions. This was particularly important for a young wife like her. Additionally, being distant from her in-laws meant fewer conflicts, which was quite favorable for Tang Zhicheng; at least he didn’t have to deal with any pressure from both sides.
