The dinner was sumptuous. Tang Zhicheng made chive-filled pancakes and tossed a mixed vegetable salad. He also cooked millet porridge and boiled salted duck eggs.
Ye Fangfei first served her son half a bowl of millet porridge and broke off half a chive pancake for him to hold and nibble on. The little sun's chair was still the one that his sister, Little Moon, had used before.
"Son, eat slowly. First the pancake, then the porridge," she reminded him gently. After making sure her son was eating properly, Ye Fangfei began to eat her own meal. Little Moon was happily eating under Tang Zhicheng's care, completely ignoring Ye Fangfei.
After dinner, while Tang Zhicheng washed the dishes, Ye Fangfei took the two children to wash up. Once they were done, Little Sun felt sleepy and wanted to go to bed. However, Little Moon insisted on showing Ye Fangfei the dress that her father had bought for her.
"Mom, look at this dress my dad got me!" Little Moon said proudly, holding up the dress.
"Wait a moment; I'll look at it later. Your brother is tired, so I need to help him sleep first," Ye Fangfei replied.
Seeing her brother rubbing his eyes sleepily, Little Moon understood and said obediently, "Okay, Mom. I won’t disturb you. You can help my brother sleep first."
Then she fell silent, merely holding the dress and imagining how it would look on her.
Little Sun could be mischievous when he was awake, but he was easy to soothe when he was sleepy. Ye Fangfei cradled him in her arms, and after a few gentle rocks, he fell asleep.
As she tried to lay her son down in the bedding, she noticed that the kang (a traditional heated bed) was still bare; the bedding had not yet been laid out. With her hands full carrying the child, she helplessly called out to her daughter.
"Sweetheart, could you help Mommy by laying out your brother's little mattress on the kang?"
"Sure, Mom! Just wait a moment; I'll be right there." Little Moon was accustomed to this task; she quickly took off her shoes and climbed onto the kang to pull out her brother's small mattress and lay it down.
She even arranged his little pillow neatly.
Little Moon was truly capable; she could help take care of her brother now. "Thank you, Little Moon," Ye Fangfei praised her without reservation.
"No need to thank me, Mommy," Little Moon replied shyly with a smile.
Ye Fangfei took off her son's outer cotton coat and pants, leaving him in just his autumn shirt as she tucked him into bed.
After giving her son a few gentle pats to ensure he was sound asleep, Ye Fangfei got off the bed to check on Little Moon's dress.
"Little Moon, come here and put this on for Mommy to see," she said, handing the dress to her daughter.
Little Moon slipped into the dress and twirled around proudly, asking, "Mommy, does it look good?"
"It looks beautiful! My daughter is especially lovely," Ye Fangfei praised.
Indeed, Little Moon looked stunning in the dress. It was red and made of the trendy velvet fabric that was popular at the time. The dress had long sleeves, clearly meant for winter wear.
"Come on, sweetheart, bring over your shoes and try them on," Ye Fangfei instructed.
The shoes were black leather boots lined with soft rabbit fur, looking warm and cozy. Little Moon obediently sat on the chair while Ye Fangfei helped her put on the little boots.
"How does it feel? Do they pinch your feet when you walk?" Ye Fangfei asked as she lifted her down from the chair.
Little Moon stomped her feet a bit and walked back and forth a couple of times before saying, "They don’t pinch; they actually feel a little big."
"A little big is fine. I’ll make you some insoles to put in them. As long as they’re not too small, I’m relieved," Ye Fangfei replied.
As for them being a bit large, that was even better; if they were big now, she might still be able to wear them next year.
