Tang Zhicheng knew that his daughter-in-law was just trying to sweet-talk him, but he willingly drank it in. What could be said about a man treating his daughter-in-law well? "You and the kids stay at home; I'll take some meat to your parents and Auntie. Is there anything else you want me to bring for them?" Tang Zhicheng asked.
Ye Fangfei thought for a moment and replied, "Why don't you take a set of lamb offal for my parents as well? Let Mom cook it and share some with Auntie."
"Sure, I'll do that right away. Should I also bring some meat for your elder brother and sister-in-law?" Just as Tang Zhicheng was about to leave, he suddenly remembered his brother-in-law.
"Oh no, I almost forgot about my brother! How about this: I'll take something for Mom and Auntie today, and I'll send something to my brother later," Ye Fangfei suggested.
"Alright, then I'll head out first," Tang Zhicheng said before walking out the door.
Left behind, Ye Fangfei felt quite regretful. Thankfully, Tang Zhicheng had reminded her; otherwise, forgetting her brother and sister-in-law would have been quite embarrassing.
Ye Zijun had gotten married six months ago. His wife was Zhang Xiuxiang from the logistics office of Ye Jianguo's mechanical factory. Their whole family worked at the factory, and her uncle was even the deputy director.
Zhang Xiuxiang was a year older than Ye Zijun; she had been divorced for a year. The reason for her divorce was that she couldn't have children.
Zhang Xiuxiang married at eighteen, but after ten years of marriage, she still hadn't given birth to a son or daughter. Her in-laws were very dissatisfied with her. She had tried various remedies but still had no news of pregnancy.
Finally, after detailed examinations at the hospital, it was discovered that Zhang Xiuxiang had a congenital uterine deformity that made pregnancy impossible. When her husband learned of this, he wasted no time in divorcing her.
After the divorce, Zhang Xiuxiang faced rumors and gossip because of her inability to bear children. Logically, she should have moved back to her parents' house after the divorce. However, her family also lived in cramped conditions, and with her nephews and nieces all grown up, they couldn't spare a room for her.
So she rented a small place near the factory to live alone. If life continued peacefully like this, Zhang Xiuxiang would have been content; after all, given her situation, remarrying wouldn’t be easy.
However, things didn’t go as smoothly as she hoped. Although Zhang Xiuxiang was divorced, she was only twenty-eight and still young. There were plenty of second-rate men who deliberately tried to flirt with her. They didn't dare approach her at the factory but would stop her on the street. It was during one of these encounters that Ye Zijun ran into Zhang Xiuxiang.
That day, Zhang Xiuxiang was walking home after work, just like any other day. As she passed by a dead-end alley, she couldn't help but quicken her pace. It was winter, and it was already dark by the time she finished work.
A couple of days earlier, two small-time thugs had hidden in that alley and tried to grab her, making unwanted advances. She had fought back fiercely and managed to escape without harm. Since then, she had developed a psychological aversion to that alley; every time she approached it, her heart raced with anxiety.
As Zhang Xiuxiang hurried past the alley, two figures suddenly burst out from the shadows and grabbed her, pulling her toward the darkened passageway. "What are you doing? Let go of me! Help!" she cried out, but before she could finish, they covered her mouth.
Zhang Xiuxiang struggled desperately, realizing she was about to be dragged into the alley. Just then, Ye Zhi-Jun happened to be passing by and heard the commotion. He quickly came over to investigate.
