When Zhang Xiuxiang and Ye Zijun met, both were taken aback. They never expected to have such a connection. Upon informing their parents, both sides agreed that they were indeed fated to be together.
Neither of them had any objections, and their families knew each other well. Both were also in their second marriages, and after a few days of dating, they decided to get married. After the wedding, they didn’t move into the Ye family home because Zhang Xiuxiang's rental lease hadn’t expired yet. To help the newlyweds cultivate their relationship, Hao Chunying allowed Ye Zijun and Zhang Xiuxiang to continue living in her rented apartment. They only returned to the Ye family home on Sundays.
Zhang Xiuxiang was particularly kind to Ye Ting, often asking Ye Zijun to bring him over to stay with them for a couple of days. Since Ye Zijun and Zhang Xiuxiang weren’t living at home, and with Ye Fangfei busy taking care of her two children, she found herself visiting her parents less frequently. Because of this limited interaction, she had almost forgotten about them. Fortunately, Tang Zhi reminded her just in time so that she wouldn’t inadvertently offend her sister-in-law.
While playing with the children at home, Ye Fangfei pondered these matters when Tang Zhi arrived at Liuye Hutong.
“Mom and Dad, are you home?” Tang Zhi parked his bicycle at the entrance of the Ye family home.
It was Sunday, and both Hao Chunying and Ye Jianguo were at home. Hao Chunying was directing Ye Jianguo as he cleaned the spider webs off the roof when they heard Tang Zhi calling out to them.
“Oh, Zhi is here! Come down!” Hao Chunying quickly urged Ye Jianguo to step down from the stool and hurried outside to greet him.
“Zhi is here? Come in! We’re having dinner tonight; Mom will make dumplings for you!” Hao Chunying welcomed him enthusiastically.
“I won’t go in, Mom; this is from Feifei for you guys,” Tang Zhi replied as he unloaded a large bag filled with meat and lamb offal from his bicycle.
“What’s this?” Hao Chunying asked curiously as she looked at the hefty bag.
At that moment, Ye Jianguo also came out. “Zhi is here? When did you come back?”
“Dad, I came back yesterday,” Tang Zhi quickly greeted his father-in-law.
Tang Zhi carried the bag to the kitchen, not wanting to bring it inside the house for fear of the strong smell.
"Mom, this is beef. And this is lamb." He opened the bag and took out the beef and lamb.
Then he showed Hao Chunying what else was in the bag: a sheep's head, sheep's hooves, and some offal.
"Feifei said you and Dad love lamb soup, so I brought this for you."
Hao Chunying and Ye Jianguo were stunned to see so much meat that Tang Zhi had brought over.
"Tang Zhi, where did you get all this meat? You should take it back; it's too much!"
"Listen to Mom, take it back," Hao Chunying insisted, trying to put the meat back into the bag.
Tang Zhi hurriedly stopped her. "Mom, what are you doing? This is for you!"
"Zhi, listen to your mom. Take it back and enjoy it yourself. You don’t need to worry about us."
Ye Jianguo chimed in with his advice as well.
They really couldn’t persuade him otherwise; if he had only brought over a pound or half a pound, they might have accepted it without hesitation. After all, they had worked hard to raise their daughter, so accepting a little meat wouldn’t weigh on their conscience.
But this was just too much meat.
The beef looked like it weighed at least a pound, and the lamb seemed to be over two pounds. Not to mention the sheep's head, hooves, and offal!
How much money was all of this worth? They couldn’t possibly accept it all!
