In the following days, Tang Zhicheng and Ye Fangfei were particularly busy. As in previous years, Tang Zhicheng was busy gathering supplies from various government agencies and factories. Every day, he would bring home different items. Meanwhile, Ye Fangfei was occupied with year-end statistics and accounting.
They continued their hustle until the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth lunar month, but this didn’t mean they were on holiday. Both had taken leave from their jobs to prepare for their trip back to their hometown.
“Zhicheng, take this roasted chicken for the kids to eat on the way. And take this snack too; they can nibble on it if they get hungry,” Ye Fangfei said, stuffing items into their travel bag.
Traveling with children required a lot of preparation, especially since they had two little ones. They needed to pack changes of clothes, snacks, drinks—everything had to be ready. After all, they couldn’t let the kids suffer while they were out.
They had an early train to catch, and after finishing work that day, Ye Fangfei didn’t have a moment to spare as she continued packing. Unfortunately, the two children were also getting in the way.
“Mommy, don’t forget to pack my dress! I want to wear it on New Year’s Day!”
“And my little military outfit! I want to wear it too!” piped up her younger brother.
“And my new hairpin and headband! I want to take them all!” Little Yueyue was quite the little fashionista, eager to bring along all her pretty accessories.
“Okay, Mommy will pack everything for you,” Ye Fangfei replied without hesitation, fulfilling each of her requests.
Ye Fangfei had already decided that during their days back in her hometown, she would dress her daughter beautifully every day. The people there tended to favor boys over girls, and she was determined not to let anyone look down on Little Yueyue. She wanted them to see that although Yueyue was a girl, in her eyes, she was just as valuable as a son.
Thus, Ye Fangfei packed two more outfits for Little Yueyue than for Little Taiyang. Not to mention there were also little leather boots and various hair accessories and ties.
Seeing that her mother agreed, Little Yueyue happily took her brother outside to find their father.
Tang Zhicheng was outside filling bags with beef and mutton offcuts. He didn’t take much; he simply matched the quantities he had given to Ye Jianguo and the others.
They took four to five pounds of beef and lamb, along with a full set of sheep offal, including the sheep's head and four hooves. All of these items filled an entire bag.
In addition, there were the cigarettes, liquor, sugar, and snacks that Ye Fangfei had bought. Over the past few days, he had brought back quite a few good things. Ye Fangfei added a pound of brown sugar and a pound of rock sugar, along with two cans of fruit. These items filled another travel bag.
As for Ye Fangfei's family, just their change of clothes and various small items amounted to two large travel bags.
"Zhicheng, this is too much, isn't it? We still have to transfer buses and take care of two kids; we simply can't carry all this," Ye Fangfei said anxiously as she looked at the three large travel bags and a nylon bag on the floor.
"It's fine. When the time comes, I'll first load the luggage onto the bus and then come back to get you all," Tang Zhicheng quickly thought of a solution.
"We can hire a tricycle when we transfer; we won't have to carry everything ourselves."
"Alright," Ye Fangfei replied.
"If we can't manage it, there's no choice; we must take these things back home."
They couldn't skimp on their change of clothes either; she had already streamlined it as much as possible.
After finishing up with their packing, Ye Fangfei and Tang Zhicheng quickly tidied up the kitchen as well.
