Tang Zhi asked, "Really? Which unit was your older brother in?"
His sister replied, "He was in a unit over in Guang Province, where he spent a total of seven or eight years. He just transitioned out last year."
"I was there for two years as well," Tang Zhi said, "but I wasn't in the same unit as him."
His sister added, "I used to follow him around when he was stationed there."
Ye Fangfei noticed their lively conversation and handed a twist of fried dough to the child, encouraging him to sit next to the little moon and eat together.
"Here you go, little one. Come sit here," she said, breaking a sausage in half and giving each of them a piece.
Seeing Ye Fangfei giving her son food, the sister quickly declined, "No, little sister, please keep it for yourselves. We brought our own food."
"It's fine, big sister. Let the kids eat. When we're out and about, we shouldn't be too particular about these things. Besides, we're all from the same hometown, right?" Ye Fangfei reassured her.
Tang Zhi chimed in, "Don't be polite, big sister. It's just a little food; it’s no trouble at all."
The sister was straightforward and could see that Tang Zhi and Ye Fangfei were sincere, so she decided not to insist further. "Alright then, thank you both!" she said.
She then pulled out a bag of roasted pumpkin seeds from her pack and offered it to Ye Fangfei and Tang Zhi. "Here you go, these are my mother's roasted pumpkin seeds. Give them a try."
Tang Zhi didn't hold back and grabbed a handful. "I haven't had pumpkin seeds in years; I definitely want to taste them."
Ye Fangfei also took a few.
Noticing that Ye Fangfei had taken only a small amount, the sister handed her a large handful. "Little sister, go ahead and eat! My mother makes them with five-spice flavor."
"Thank you so much, big sister," Ye Fangfei replied gratefully.
"You can tell she's well-mannered just by how she speaks," the sister remarked.
"What do you do for work, little sister?" she asked with familiarity.
Ye Fangfei wasn't used to such casual conversations with strangers. She smiled briefly and replied, "I work at the goods building."
After saying this, she turned her attention back to the child.
Tang Zhi understood that Ye Fangfei preferred not to engage too deeply with others and took over the conversation. "My wife is an accountant at the goods building; she's quite accomplished."
"Oh wow! I really admire people like you," the sister said enviously. "I knew you all must be capable individuals."
"Well, it's not that impressive," Tang Zhi replied modestly. "Our hometown is poor; we didn't have the means to support our education. Otherwise, we could have gone to high school too."
"You’re absolutely right! I was a good student when I was in school," she reminisced.
The family was poor, and I was just a girl. After graduating from elementary school, they said I couldn't continue my studies. Otherwise, I might have been able to get into college, the eldest sister lamented.
Tang Zhi replied, "Of course! Just looking at you, I can tell you're smart. It's just that you didn't have the right opportunities."
"But there's nothing we can do about the past. We must ensure that the children study well," he added.
"Yes, that's what I think too," the eldest sister said as she began to talk about her own children.
As they conversed, they grew closer in their discussion. Eventually, the eldest sister mentioned that her partner would come to the city to pick her up.
"There's no need for you all to take a bus; my man can drive you," she offered.
Ye Fangfei was pleasantly surprised by this good fortune and admired Tang Zhi's ability to connect with people even more.
"How can we accept that? It's fine; we can take the bus together as a family," Tang Zhi politely declined.
"Come on, why are you being so polite? We're going there anyway," the eldest sister insisted warmly.
