Tang Zhi glanced at Ye Fangfei and then at the two children who looked wilted. He accepted Xie Chunsheng's good intentions, saying, "Then I’ll trouble you, Brother Xie."
"Not a trouble at all. It's fate that we know each other," Xie Chunsheng replied.
It took them three hours to reach Tang Zhi's hometown in Guangping County, mainly because the roads were covered in snow and difficult to navigate. Xie Chunsheng didn’t dare to drive too fast.
Their home was located in the family compound of the Grain Bureau on the main street. Once they arrived, Sister Zhang helped the children out of the car.
"Xiao Ye, Xiao Tang, I won’t keep you any longer. I know you’re eager to go," Sister Zhang said. "Make sure to visit me when you have time in a few days. I’ll make you my famous braised pork. You’ll definitely want to come back for more after tasting it."
"Sure, if we come to the county after the New Year, we will definitely visit," Ye Fangfei replied, pulling out a box of Jingdeshun pastries to hand over.
"Sister Zhang, this is a snack I brought from Beijing for you to try."
"No, no, you must take it back. I can’t accept such an expensive gift," Sister Zhang quickly waved her hands in refusal.
"Oh come on, it's just a box of pastries. Take it!" Ye Fangfei insisted.
"If you treat me like an outsider, I won't let Brother Xie drive us anymore," she added playfully as she pretended to get out of the car.
Seeing Ye Fangfei's determination, Sister Zhang realized that refusing the pastries would be futile. Besides, Xie Chunsheng was going to drive them directly home.
Reluctantly, she accepted the box of pastries. "Alright then, I’ll take it. It looks like it’s going to snow again soon; you should hurry along."
"Once you're in town, make sure to get home safely!"
"Got it, Sister Zhang. You two should head inside quickly; don’t let the kids get cold," Ye Fangfei said.
Xie Chunsheng chimed in, "You two hurry inside; I’ll drop them off and be right back."
Without waiting for Sister Zhang's response, he drove off.
Tang Zhi sat beside him directing as they left the city; the roads became even worse—filled with potholes and bumps.
Fortunately, there weren't many pedestrians on the road, so they didn't have to worry while driving. Cars were indeed faster than ox carts; usually, a journey that took an hour and a half by ox cart could be completed in just half an hour by car. This was considering the poor condition of the road; in summer, they could probably make it in twenty minutes.
When they arrived at the entrance, Tang Zhi got out of the car first and shouted into the yard, "Mom and Dad, we're here!" After calling out, he opened the back door and let Ye Fangfei carry Little Sun down. "Wife, we're home. Come on down."
Once Ye Fangfei had stepped out, Tang Zhi picked up Little Moon and brought her down as well. At that moment, Grandma Tang and the others rushed out of the house.
"Third Son, you're here!"
"Third Son, is that really you?"
"I thought I was hearing things! I could have sworn it was your voice. Everyone else said I was mistaken."
Then they noticed the car parked at the entrance.
"Wow! Third Son, where did you get this car?" Tang Zhi walked over and circled around the vehicle.
